Gorgeous MartinLogan TOTL Towers in High Gloss Motion 60XTAbsolutely Gorgeous Recent Model MartinLogan Top of the Line Towers in High Gloss Black Cherry Wood
These multiple award winning floorstanders are not only breath-taking to behold, but fantastic in terms of sound and clarity as well. Here is a small sample of their industry reviews:
Hometheater Review, Brent Butterworth: "the Motion 60XT is easily one of the best speakers I’ve tested, delivering incredibly lifelike tonality and imaging... the Motion 60XT definitely delivers the magic that audiophiles always seek but too often fail to achieve.”
The Absolute Sound, David Martson: “Immediately, I was taken aback; the broad, sharply defined soundstage extended well beyond the width of the speakers, the vocals sounded eerily lifelike, and the instrumental timbre was natural, with a depth so palpable I could practically reach my hands into it.”
Sound & Visions, Michael Trei: “I generally find too often that a home theater system can be riddled with poor compromises when it comes to playing music; that’s why I have completely separate systems for two-channel and multichannel listening. The MartinLogan package does a pretty convincing job of straddling that divide, working quite effectively with both music and movies when set up appropriately... you’re really getting a whole lot of speaker for your hard-earned money... (the FoldedMotion tweeter is) an impressive achievement in itself, giving the Motion XT speakers a decisive advantage in clarity over many conventional designs. When you couple that with the allure of the aluminum cone woofers and midrange drivers, as well as the Motion’s chic sense of styling, the overall package has great appeal. “Truth in Sound,” indeed.” –
From MartinLogan:
"Dominant floorstanding speaker with a Folded Motion® XT tweeter, black aluminum mid-range & dual 8" woofers with rear-firing bass ports, and a luscious high-gloss piano black finish.
The elegant Motion 60XT tower speaker is the most powerful addition to MartinLogan's award-winning Motion® Series and is voice-matched with the entire Motion Series lineup.
The Motion 60XT speaker features our advanced resolution Folded Motion® XT tweeter and have been designed with a luscious high-gloss piano black finish, subtle angled-top cabinet with soft radius corners and signature MartinLogan perforated grille.
A Versatile Performer
XT stands for extreme, and for good reason. Motion 60XT speakers play louder, lower, and with unflinching accuracy. Dual 8" woofers and rear-firing bass ports create astonishing deep, precise bass, while a dedicated mid woofer promotes an open, revealing and authentic midrange. Paring this powerful trio with our most accurate Folded Motion XT tweeter creates audible acoustic alchemy that delivers an engaging and encompassing experience, cutting straight to the emotion locked inside your favorite recordings.
Each speaker features dual sets of custom 5-way binding posts for bi-wire/bi-amp capabilities and powerful rear-firing bass port. Stability is enhanced to create tighter coupling between speaker and floor with the included spikes.
Engineering Genius
What makes the Motion Series sound so amazing? MartinLogan's dedicated in-house engineering team started by utilizing and refining the most advanced, compact technologies and combining them with innovative engineering. The result is an emotionally engaging sound that rivals (and most times trounces) traditional loudspeakers of similar size and price.
Folded Motion® XT Tweeters
The signature Folded Motion tweeters utilize extremely low mass diaphragms that "squeeze" air, and require significantly less excursion than the typical 1-inch dome tweeter, which drastically minimizes distortion while providing a lightning fast response time. The increased surface area also provides a wide, yet controlled sound dispersion to create a realistic and carefully etched sound stage.
The low distortion Folded Motion XT tweeter boasts a radiating surface 40% larger than those found in the award-winning Motion® Series products. This substantial leap in size increases the bandwidth and efficiency of the high-performance tweeter for effortless performance."
Get closer to your favorite music and movies
The Motion 60XT floor-standing speaker plays loud and low, and with impressive transparency and presence.
The Motion 60XT is the flagship of MartinLogan's Motion series speaker line. It's carefully engineered to produce stunningly transparent and natural sound, whether you're listening to music or movie soundtracks. Beautiful on the outside, the Motion 60XT will reveal layer upon layer of sonic detail, unlocking the emotion inside your favorite recordings. You'll hear a wide, deep soundstage with realistic imaging fleshed out in pinpoint detail, and anchored by effortlessly deep bass.
Folded Motion XT tweeter for detailed sound
MartinLogan's innovative Folded Motion XT tweeter uses a pleated diaphragm that works similarly to an accordion by "squeezing" air to create sound. Because it requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, response time is drastically reduced along with distortion. The diaphragm's increased surface area also provides wide, yet controlled sound dispersion to create a realistic and highly accurate soundstage. Music sounds amazingly detailed, but smooth and effortless, without a trace of harshness. And the XT tweeter boasts a 40% larger radiating surface area than that of ML's standard Folded Motion design, for even greater bandwidth and efficiency.
Expressive midrange and deep, effortless bass
The Motion 60XT uses a low-distortion 6-1/2" aluminum cone to supply fast, clean, and open-sounding midrange, so vocals sound almost as if the singer were in the room. Dual 8" woofers with rigid cast aluminum baskets ensure the Motion 60XT goes deep and clean. These drivers increase low-frequency output, making sure bass response isn't an afterthought or left for a subwoofer to worry about. Two rear-firing bass ports help efficiently enhance bass response without adding distortion to this speaker's pristine performance.
All that and looks too
MartinLogan knows how to catch ears and eyes. The Motion 60XT in flawless Gloss Black finish looks striking; its cabinet features a gently angled top and soft-radius corners, making it stand out from the typical box-shaped tower speaker. Removable floor spikes and stabilizer bars offer firm footing while enhancing this speaker's natural sound.

Impressive Current Model Goldenear Floorstanders Triton 7Impressive Current Model Goldenear Floorstanders
Want a reference-quality floor-standing speaker that sounds as good or better than much pricier options? The Triton Seven delivers what GoldenEar calls "boxless three-dimensional imaging" with the smooth, non-fatiguing character of its HVFR™ (High-Velocity Folded Ribbon) tweeter. By squeezing air — rather than pushing it like a conventional tweeter — the HVFR design delivers articulate nuance with very low distortion. This high-end tweeter is placed between two 5-1/4" woofers, and there are two 8" bass radiators, one on each side of this floor-stander's non-resonant curved cabinet.
The Triton Seven's driver arrangement — with its world-class tweeter positioned between the woofers — helps keep the transition between drivers smooth and seamless. The speaker's front baffle is angled upward, to focus the sound toward ear level.
The Triton Seven presents sparkling highs, robust bass without bloat, and ultra-low distortion, all with breathtakingly wide dispersion, for a soundstage that reaches out into the room as well as behind the speakers.
Designed with a simple, functional ergonomic visual aesthetic, this tower seems to lose itself in the mix it projects. And it will all but disappear in the darkness of a home theater setting.

Stunning Flagship Model PSB Floor-Standers Stratus Goldi (90lb!)Massive, Highly Desirable PSB Stratus Goldi Floor-standing speakers finished in real wood Black Ash Veneer. (90 lbs each!)
From PSB:
The Goldi utilizes a highly evolved aluminum-dome tweeter design platform – like each and every PSB driver, a completely proprietary design – with a unique combination of performance factors. Exceptional extension yields outstanding accurate treble, tremendous dynamic linearity delivers the clarity of details both loud and soft for which Stratus speakers are famous, and unusually even, broad dispersion promotes superbly true-to-life-imaging and “soundstage”.
The Stratus woofers are engineered for dynamic range, controlled expression, and exceptionally linear high-output reproduction. Together, these superb transducers enable the Stratus models’ smooth, accurate reproduction and remarkable dynamic potential. Combining this with our never ending quality control, we compare each speaker to it’s reference standard, a much overlooked but crucial factor – to yield consistently matched speakers. This, in turn, produces the Stratus Series’ wonderfully natural, stable, and precise spatial qualities.

Radique's Take: A word of caution about the PSB's Goldi's. I had read that they are "thirsty" speakers, but hadn't appreciated fully until spending some time with them exactly how true this is. While PSB recommends them for a broad range of amplifiers (from 15 - 300 Watts), and their rated Sensitivity would appear to bear that out, first hand experience would indicate that they don't truly come alive until fed some serious power. They sound good, (perhaps even great) with modest amplification, but they become truly epic when fed serious power. I'd recommend at least 100 WPC of high quality amplification, preferably 150+.
These Beauties were proudly made in Canada and retailed for over $3K when new.

Impressive, Hand Crafted Compact Totem Towers ArroImpressive, Hand Crafted Compact Totem Towers in Black Ash Finish
From Totem:
"Straight to the heart
The Totem Arro shoots straight to the heart. The Arro’s strong frequency extension and broad-spectrum harmonics blend in a phase-perfect conjunction that transmits the true essence of music. With its ultra-slim design, the alluring and versatile Arro speaker is an aesthetic room-pleaser that allows endless placement possibilities.
Omni-directional in character, the Arro defies the laws of physics with extreme bass extension and holographic sound imaging. If you like authentic-sounding performances that reach beyond the realm of space and time, experience the streamlined beauty of the Totem Arro.
Customized Drivers
Every single driver is completely unique to Totem and proprietary in design, engineered by Totem and then manufactured to the strictest standards to meet our parameters by the finest raw driver suppliers in the world. In some cases, where the technology is beyond the capabilities of suppliers or is wished to kept secret, Totem can and will build our own drivers. Every driver exhibits phase linearity, speed, emotion, off axis natural presentation, and spatial articulation.
Handmade Crossovers
Totem crossovers don’t require many parts because of the synergy between our customized drivers, but the components are the world’s best. Our crossovers aren’t built on PCB’s because the laminated conductive tracks are weak and inconsistent. Instead they are secured to a thin piece of fiberboard or insulated polymers and components are mechanically crimped together because it simply sounds better. When we must solder, we choose WBT Silver Solder, the purest in the industry.
Artisanal Cabinet Construction
Meticulously hand crafted for peak performance that lasts decades. Lock-Miter assembly is an intricate woodworking procedure where edges physically interlock together. The resulting cabinet is up to 5 times stronger than conventional V Groove cabinets. Internal and external veneering resists warping, structurally fortifies, and ensures consistent peak performance. Industry unique Borosilicate damping manages dissipation, keeps the cabinet musically alive, and never deteriorates. Popular materials like poly fillers eventually decay, dramatically affecting the performance. Variable Density Fiberboard is denser at the extremities than the interior to reduce repetitive nodes and resonances.
Two sets of high conductivity gold plated connectors efficiently capture the incoming signal for superior speaker performance and allow traditional, bi-wire, or even bi-amplification options. They accommodate a variety of connection options such as bare wire, banana plugs, and spades."

Attractive, Modern PSB Slim Towers Image 5TThe PSB Image 5T Floor-Standing Speakers are tall 3-Driver towers with dual front ports and a modern appearance.
The tweeter is a 1” aluminum dome with ferrofluid, a 6.5” mid-range/bass driver and the same for a bass unit, each with rubber surrounds. Each of the two 6.5” drivers has a 2”vented port. Crossovers are a Linkwitz-Riley 4th order at 500 Hz between the two 6.5” drivers, and a 3rd order Butterworth at 2.5 kHz leading up to the tweeter.
The two and a half way design is intended to produce coherent sound from proximate drivers. In other words, the 1” tweeter is next to the 6.5” driver that picks up where the tweeter leaves off, thus that range of sound comes from about the same area in the front baffle. The lower 6.5” driver plays only below 500 Hz and thus integrates with the middle driver.
Sensitivity is quite high, rated at 92 dB in a typical room and 90 db in an anechoic chamber.
The top of the front baffle is a curved plastic molding that houses the drivers. The grille is set on a rigid plastic frame that is curved to fit the baffle. Black plastic feet hug the bottom sides giving a smart appearance, and adding to stability. A dual set of gold plated binding posts with plastic fasteners are set on the bottom of the rear panel, thus allowing for bi-wire or bi-amp configurations.

Great sounding quality 4-Driver Towers from Infinity Beta 40The Betas are our favourite mid-range series from Infinity.
We've been using a pair of trusty Beta 50's in our primary listening area for the past several years, and we'd used Beta 40's previously for the same application. We had them set up in a bi-wired configuration, and they sound extremely impressive for this price point.
Music and movie lovers will find a lot to like in Infinity's Beta 40. This slender tower speaker uses Infinity's most advanced drivers to produce a wide soundstage and precise imaging. Its solid MDF cabinet houses a 1" tweeter, a 5" midrange, and dual 6-1/2" woofers. You'll enjoy detailed, accurate highs and mids plus distinct, musical bass.
This speaker owes its open, natural sound to Infinity's patented Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragm driver material — the same material Infinity uses in their top-of-the-line models. CMMD™ combines layers of ceramic with a stiff metal core for crystal-clear sonic performance. It's strong and durable, yet incredibly lightweight and responsive.
Features: video-shielded, bass-reflex (ported) enclosure, two sets of quality 5-way binding posts for bi-wiring, innovative metal grills (great for preventing small hands from denting the domes or cones)
Power Handling of 200 Watts at 8 Ohms impedance, Frequency response 45-20,000 Hz (±3dB), Sensitivity of 91 dB
Drivers: 3-way design featuring: 1" CMMD tweeter, 5" CMMD midrange driver, dual 6-1/2" CMMD woofers
Dimensions: 8-7/8"W x 38-5/16"H x 13-3/8"D. Weight: 50.26 pounds each.
MSRP of $800 USD. This pair is in very good cosmetic and sonic condition. Asking just $495 Canadian.

Infinity SM 115Infinity Studio Monitor Series Super High Efficiency Speakers.
These superb speakers were under-valued in their day, priced to compete with lower-quality offerings, but truly deserving of their "Studio Monitor Series" designation. Their smooth and transparent response make them ideal for classical music or jazz - without the "jukebox" bass suited to rock or disco music.
They're also perfect for building a home theater system on a budget, able to provide clear dialog without a center-channel speaker and all the necessary explosions and earthquakes without a sub-woofer. And due their super-high efficiency (see specs below) they can do it all without a high-powered amplifier.

Tannoy Revolution Floorstanders w/ Real Wood VeneerHigh end, ultra-compact floorstander from Tannoy, operating in a two-and-a-half-way configuration and boasting real wood veneer in "espresso" finish.
The small diameter drivers means the enclosure – about 11 litres in capacity at a rough estimate – is exceptionally slim and quite shallow, which certainly ensures a high WAF rating.
The actual cones used here are just 80mm in diameter, so the area of each one is only around two-thirds that of the 100mm cones used in the 130mm units that are commonly found in miniature speakers.
Two 80mm cones, however, have a combined area that's not all that far short of those used by the ubiquitous 165mm drivers. Both drivers' coated paper cone diaphragms are driven by 33mm voice coils, while the dual concentric's tweeter uses a 19mm titanium dome, well protected down behind a tulip waveguide horn.
Amongst the luxury touches on these Tannoy's, the outside edges of both drive units are decorated by shiny alloy trim rings.
Twin terminal pairs provide bi-wire or bi-amp options and are conveniently situated close to the floor. According to Tannoy, the internal wiring and crossover components have been carefully selected on sound quality grounds.
The strengths of these speakers are their overall coherence and openness through the broad midband, which brings considerable expressiveness and believability to human voices, sung or spoken. This is arguably the most important trick that any speaker can pull and the bonus here is that the speaker is free from any heaviness or chestiness and has a fine agility and freedom from boxiness.
Then there's the dual concentric bonus, which brings fine imaging to the table, alongside superior off-axis consistency, so a good stereo image is well maintained across a generous listening zone.

Distinctive Technics Speakers w Aluminum honeycomb Tech SB-X700ADistinctive Vintage Technics Speakers with proprietary Aluminum honeycomb Driver technology, Made in Japan.
Radique's Take: Efficient, extremely accurate vintage Technics Speakers. Definitely quite different from the more ubiquitous mass market Technics floor standers.
Description below excerpted from excellent review at
"A good dynamic speaker driver should have a rigid, low-mass diaphragm, or radiating surface, and speaker designers have tried for years to develop driver shapes and materials that approximate a rigid-piston ideal. Rigidity is important because a flexing driver radiating surface produces an uneven frequency response through the effect known as “cone breakup.” A low-mass material is needed for a driver to have reasonably high efficiency; a massive cone may be satisfactory otherwise, but it requires higher amplifier driving power.
Most dynamic drivers use cone-shaped diaphragms (the cone shape imparts considerable rigidity to a driver) molded of paper or low-mass plastic mixtures. A few years ago, Technics developed a “honeycomb” diaphragm structure that the company believes comes closer to the piston-radiator ideal than previous designs, and it has introduced a line of speaker systems whose drivers employ this honeycomb construction.
The “cone” of a Technics honeycomb driver is a flat plate shaped like the classic circular piston. It is made of a very light aluminum honeycomb whose “axial symmetry” gives it equal rigidity (resistance to bending) in all directions. The honeycomb’s cell density increases toward the center of the disc, concentrating the vibration nodes (regions around which the flexing modes pivot) near the center. This enables the voice coil to drive the diaphragm at a vibration node, further minimizing flexing and spurious resonances.
The honeycomb is sandwiched between two layers of thin aluminum-foil “skin,” forming a disc about 1/4 inch thick, with a conventional (though relatively large-diameter) voice coil bonded to its rear surface. In other respects a Technics honeycomb driver is much like a conventional cone speaker, except that its extremely light, rigid diaphragm (about 1,000 times more rigid than paper) is relatively free of the usual cone breakup (resonance) effects. Also, flat-diaphragm drivers mounted in the same plane are necessarily aligned in signal phase; expensive crossover-network designs or unusual cabinet shapes are therefore not needed in order to compensate for the different depths of the drivers in a system.
The SB-X700 is the largest of three honeycomb-driver systems Technics has introduced to the American market. It is a three-way system with a vertically aligned 12-inch woofer, a 3-1/8-inch midrange driver, and a 1-1/8-inch tweeter. The two lower-frequency drivers have honeycomb diaphragms, and the tweeter uses a flat laminated-mica diaphragm radiating through a radially slotted disc so as to improve its dispersion. The crossover frequencies are 1,000 and 4,000 Hz, and the woofer operates in a ported enclosure.
The Technics SB-X700, nominally an 8-ohm system, is rated to deliver a 90-dB sound-pressure level at 1 meter with an input of 1 watt. It is rated to handle a drive power of up to 180 watts of music signal. The frequency response of the SB-X700 is specified as 39 to 30,000 Hz “at 10 dB below average level,” with no explanation of this unconventional rating.
The walnut-grain-veneered cabinet of the SB-X700 is 26-3/8 inches high, 15 inches wide, and 13 inches deep, and the system weighs about 36-1/2 pounds. The black cloth grille unsnaps to reveal the drivers and two knobs for adjusting the levels of the midrange and high-frequency drivers. A thermal circuit breaker with a front-panel reset button protects the speaker against burnout during sustained high-power operation.
We first heard the Technics honeycomb speakers, then being introduced to the Japanese market, a couple of years ago on a visit to the company’s Osaka headquarters. We were favorably impressed by what we heard and looked forward to hearing and testing them in a familiar environment. (Only too often we find that speakers that sound impressive in the field fail to live up to their promise when they finally come to us for testing.) Although the SB-X700 probably differs slightly from the speakers we heard in Japan, we were not at all disappointed by what we heard and measured in the lab.
To some extent, the sound of the SB-X700 can be predicted from its measured frequency response. Its sound was warm and sometimes bordered on heaviness in our rather absorbent listening/test room. The sound was best with the speakers placed on the floor; positioning them about 28 inches above the floor and against a wall produced excessive bass emphasis in our room (of course, the results in another environment would probably be very different). The middles and highs were smooth and uncolored; the sound stage, at times remarkably lifelike, was located approximately in the plane of the speakers and a couple of feet in front of the wall. These are thoroughly listenable and enjoyable speakers, standing up well in comparisons with a number of far costlier systems."

Radique's take: While Wharfedale has made many high-end audiophile-grade speakers, the Valdus series offers more of a big box American sound (think Cerwin Vega / JBL), with bright high's and hard hitting bass. If you're looking for a mellow sound, then best to look elsewhere. If you're looking for a speaker to play at higher volumes for rock or pop music, then these Valdus 400's could be just the ticket for you.

DCM TF350A rare pair of DCM Time Frame Model 350 vintage speakers circa 1988.
DCM in their earlier days made their speakers with a Transmission Line design. This extended the bass lower than one would expect considering the small footprint of the speakers. They image wonderfully and are quite sonically transparent.
DCM TF350's have that distinctive Time Window sonic signature. DCM did not stray far from the Time Window success and enjoyed a cult like following in the 1980's. The musical presentation is near holographic. First and foremost is the much improved sound-stage. The depth is quite profound. Although they don't disappear altogether, the cabinets just about go away when listening. So, instead of closing one's eyes and hearing music coming from two distinct places, it's now more of a wall of sound in front of the listener.
The Time Frame speakers are mirror imaged speakers. Meaning there is a left and right to them. By placing the DCM Logo to the inside edges of the pair, this accomplished the mirror image effect. Like the Time Windows they have a fabric sock covering that encircles the entire speaker, with wood trim at the top and bottom of the speaker. They weigh about 32 pounds each and measure 15 inches across the base, stand 38 inches tall and have a depth of about 6 inches. Construction is first rate, these are very sturdy speakers. The base has a fold out pedestal for additional support, a very nice touch.
They have a 6 1/2" woofer and .75 inch kick ass Phillips dome tweeter.
Rated for amplifiers; 20 to 150 watts per channel, and nicely efficient at 90db/1watt/1meter
These speakers excel at Jazz and Classical music as well as vocals. The DCM TF350 can rock, make no mistake about that, but for the over the edge rocker, it won't be mistaking them for Cerwin Vega's or JBL's.
Radique's Take: after listening to these TF 350's extensively, their sound belies their modest driver size; listening blind would have guessed them to be 10" woofers. If you're looking for attractive, great sounding vintage speakers for your music listening system, these might be the ideal choice for you!
