Radique's Take: These speakers are on the warm, mellow side; fantastic if that's how you like your music. Build quality and finish are excellent for this price point. We highly recommend this model from Monitor Audio. The Silver S2 is a beautifully finished speaker with elegant proportions. The unbraced cabinet is made from ¾" MDF, veneered on both sides and lined with foam. The crossover is mounted to a printed circuit board behind the two pairs of binding posts. The drivers are connected with fairly heavy-duty cable, and the connections are soldered, a nice touch at this price level. The two magnetically shielded drive-units are mounted vertically in line. As well as cast chassis, they feature diaphragms formed from an aluminum-magnesium alloy that Monitor Audio calls "C-CAM." The 1" tweeter has a protective mesh grille, the woofer a flared cone with a bullet-shaped dust-cap and a half-roll rubber surround. The woofer's nominal chassis diameter is 7"—quite large for a two-way design. Description: Two-way, reflex-loaded, stand-mounted, magnetically shielded loudspeaker.      | Quality B&W Bookshelf Speakers in Cherry Finish DM601 S2 | Attractive, great sounding bookshelf speakers from B&W in rare Cherry Finish. Original Packaging included. DM 601 S2 measures just 356x204x244mm, or 14x8x9.6 inches (HxWxD), and weighs in at 6.1 kilos (13.4 lb). In my book, this is called a small speaker, though the weight is a little above the norm in this class. The sales literature describes it as a "2- way 4th-order vented system", or a bass reflex ported speaker. It uses two drivers, a 165mm (6.5 inch) mid/bass driver and a metal coated 25mm (1") dome tweeter. Crossover is at 4 kHz, efficiency is rated at 88dB/1W/1m, impedance is said to be 8 Ohms nominal (4.3 Ohms minimum - kudos to B&W for quoting the worst case!), and response is said to be 70Hz-20kHz +/- 3dB on axis. Dispersion is also quoted, something I wish other speaker manufacturers would also pick up as a habit, at within 2dB at 40 degrees horizontal and 10 degrees vertical. Harmonic distortion is said to be below 1% 88-20.000 Hz at 90dB SPL at 1m. Power handling is said to be 25-100W continuous of unclipped programme into 8 Ohms nominal - impressive for what is supposed to be a small speaker. Its technical highlight is no doubt the woven Kevlar® bass/mid cone; it is very becomingly yellow in color, but thankfully uses rubber rather than foam surround, so it should last a very long time. The bullet-like CENTER of the cone is a phase plug, now almost mandatory on European speakers with any pretensions. And yes, the reflex port is on the front baffle, much more preferable than on the back. The front baffle is somewhat uncommon insofar that it is uneven, preferring a slightly "rough" surface to a perfectly smooth one - this should bode well for decreasing front baffle refraction. A good move. Speakers are equipped with dual pairs of 5-Way bindings, suitable for Banana Plugs and optional Bi-wiring.    | Distinctive, Audiophile Quality NHT Bookshelf speakers 1.3 | Finished in a gloss-black high-pressure laminate, the 1.3 is elegant, even beautiful, and is distinguished by its unusual angled front baffle. This design means that the rear baffle is nonparallel to the driver, thus reducing the amount of internal cabinet energy reflected back toward the woofer. This is said to improve imaging and midrange purity by reducing comb filtering. In addition, the angled baffle puts the listener directly on-axis with the loudspeakers pointing straight ahead. This increases the ratio of direct-to-reflected sound reaching the listener and further improves imaging. Rather than use off-the-shelf drivers, the 6" woofer and 1" soft-dome tweeter are custom-made for NHT. The woofer took 18 months to develop from the ground up, and is manufactured in Asia by KSC. The tweeter is made by Tonegen in Japan, to NHT's specifications. Tonegen manufactures many drivers for high-end loudspeakers, including, I believe, the EMITs for Infinity. The drivers are mounted symmetrically on the front baffle, vertically in-line. Crossover frequency is 3.1kHz, with second-order slopes and a damping compensation network. Air-core inductors are used, along with some polypropylene capacitors. A single pair of five-way binding posts is mounted in a large cup in the rear panel. In addition to its attractive appearance, the Model 1.3 has excellent fit and finish. Excerpt from Stereophile's excellent review: "Conclusion The NHT Model 1.3 excels in those areas that are most important musically: tonal neutrality, uncolored and transparent midrange, and well-defined and articulate bass presentation. In these areas, it rivals much more expensive loudspeakers. The midrange is especially clear and detailed, giving instruments and vocals a natural texture and providing an excellent view into the presentation. I prefer the 1.3's somewhat lean mid-to-upper bass to a tubby, underdamped bass. This improves the overall presentation by the absence of that thick, congested sound that often accompanies a loose bass. In addition, the bass was articulate and agile, clearly resolving pitch. The slight loss of body and warmth to some instruments was, in my opinion, worth the increase in definition and control. In addition, bass extension was surprising for the 1.3's cabinet size. These highly-reviewed speakers are in excellent condition, and boast B&W's "Prism" system: The rear baffle's inner surface is a complex configuration of randomly arrayed tapered pyramids, said to resemble the walls of an anechoic chamber. B&W claims that it eliminates standing waves within the cabinet and enhances both bass definition and "speed." From the outside, this panel's honeycomb of rectangles looks like a waffle iron.     | Large, Well Reviewed Athena Bookshelf speakers AS-B2 | TOTL Quality Bookshelf speakers from Athena's Audition line. This model has received rave reviews including in "GoodSound" March 15, 2006 article, where it was compared very favourable to the Paradigm Titan, and even the much more expensive MB Quart QLC-204. At 15.75"H x 7.875"W x 9.5"D, the speaker is a bit tall and narrow for a bookshelf monitor, which only adds to its sleek profile. This bass-reflex design is ported in the rear, and connection is made via gold-plated five-way binding posts that can accept bare wires of up to 12 gauge. The one-piece faceplate is covered in a smoky silvery composite material that presents a contemporary look that should integrate nicely with most home-theater setups. The AS-B2 is magnetically shielded, which enables placement near a video display. The AS-B2.2 looks striking. At the top, a 1" Teteron tweeter sits like a reflective gray bubble, secured by four small silver screws to an oval enclosure fixed in place with four more small screws. Below this is a large black dust cap in the center of a 6.5" polypropylene woofer that matches the color of the tweeter. This driver has a black rubber surround and is secured with more silver screws. The third circle on the face of the speaker is a discreet black button near the bottom with the brand name in small lowercase silver lettering. All of this detailing -- pegs, screws, letters -- combines with the attractive shades of the dominant silver styling to catch the light and sparkle in contrast with the black of the box itself. The AS-B2.2 has a reported impedance of 8 ohms, a claimed frequency range of 50Hz-20kHz, and can handle up to 150Wpc.
