Radique Audio Banana Plug Installation Guide
🔌 Radique Audio Banana Plug Installation Guide
Step-by-step installation — plus answers to the questions we get asked most 🎧
Radique Audio banana plug installation is quick, clean, and straightforward — and this guide will walk you through every step. Our Radique Audio banana plugs use a dual set-screw, vertical-channel design that delivers a rock-solid connection between your speaker wire and your speakers or amplifier. Below, you’ll find the full step-by-step process followed by answers to the most common questions we hear from customers. 🛠️

🛠️ Radique Audio banana plug installation — step-by-step
Proper Radique Audio banana plug installation only takes a few minutes with a small flat-head screwdriver and a little patience. Here’s the full process:
Step 1: Carefully strip the ends of your speaker wire to expose about 1.5 cm (⅝”) of bare wire.
Step 2: Twist the exposed strands of wire tightly, so that there are no loose strands.
Step 3: Remove the red or black outer alloy jacket from the banana plug by holding the exposed gold end and gently unscrewing the outer jacket.
Step 4: Use a small flat-head screwdriver to partially loosen the small gold set screws in the exposed gold tube. Try not to remove them entirely — they can be fiddly to re-insert. You’re just opening a channel down the center of the gold tube.
Step 5: Insert the stripped speaker wire fully into the gold tube.
Step 6: Use the flat-head screwdriver to tighten the set screws so that they firmly grip the inserted speaker wire.
Step 7: Holding the banana plug in one hand and the speaker wire in the other, give a firm tug on the wire to confirm it won’t easily pull out of the gold tube. If it stays firmly in place, continue to Step 8. If the wire pulls out, repeat from Step 4 and review our tips below. 🔁
Step 8: Reinstall the outer coloured alloy jacket on your banana plug. Make sure to match the jacket colour to the polarity of the connection — red jacket for positive, black jacket for negative. 🔴⚫
That’s it — your Radique Audio banana plugs are now ready to plug into the binding posts on your speakers or amplifier. Repeat the process for each end of each speaker wire.
🛒 Need more banana plugs? You can grab a set from our Radique Audio Gold-Plated Banana Plugs product page. They’re available in packs of 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, and 14 pairs — so whether you’re wiring up a stereo pair or a full surround system, we’ve got you covered (and the larger packs save you more per pair). 🎯
🔌 My speaker bindings don’t seem to have a receptacle for a banana plug — what’s going on?
Many speakers — particularly those built or designed in Europe — ship with small plastic caps covering the receptacles in their binding posts. These are usually black or red plastic, and can be gently pried out of the top of the binding post with a small flat-head screwdriver. Once removed, your Radique Audio banana plugs will slide right in. 👌
📏 Why can’t I fit my Radique Audio banana plugs into the binding posts on my speakers or amplifier? They seem too large.
Our banana plugs will fit the vast majority (99%+) of standard binding posts. Once installed correctly on your speaker wire, you just need to line up the plug carefully and push it solidly into the receptacle at the top of the binding. This can take a bit of force, particularly with brand-new plugs. 💪
A snug fit is a good thing — it means a great electrical connection. If you’re really having trouble, double-check that you’ve removed any plastic caps (see the question above) and that the binding post nut is fully tightened down (see below).
🕵️ One rare exception worth mentioning: We’ve come across a very small number of components that appear to have banana plug inputs, but are actually proprietary connectors that only accept the original manufacturer’s cables. These are quite rare, but if you suspect you may have one of these, please reach out to us with the make and model of your component, and we’ll happily confirm for you before you commit to a set of plugs. 🤝
🌀 My speaker wires wobble around in the binding posts more than I expected — is that normal?
Nope — and the fix is usually quick. Please make sure that the plastic nut on your binding post is fully tightened down to the base of the bindings before plugging in your speaker wires. If the nut is even slightly loose, it can prevent the banana plug from seating fully in the receptacle, which causes wobble. 🔧
🧵 Thin-wire tips for your Radique Audio banana plug installation
If your wire is 16 AWG or thinner, we recommend this easy fix: strip the shielding on your wire back a little further, double the bare wire back over itself, and apply a little twist to the doubled portion. This gives the set screws a larger diameter of wire to grip, and you’ll get a firm, reliable hold. 🪢
🪵 My speaker wire is very thick — I’m having trouble inserting it into the banana plug.
Our Radique Audio banana plugs are rated to work with 12 AWG speaker wire and thinner gauges. The key is to put a tight twist on the stripped portion of the wire first, which compresses the strands together before insertion. If you’re using something thicker than 12 AWG, unfortunately these plugs aren’t the right fit for your cable — but for virtually all mainstream speaker cable (including most audiophile-grade 12, 14, and 16 AWG cables), a firm twist is all you need. 💪
🔩 The outer jacket of my banana plugs seems to loosen over time — is there anything I can do to prevent that?
For most customers who install these plugs once and leave them connected, the outer jackets will stay firmly screwed in place without any extra steps. 👍
For customers who frequently unplug and re-insert their banana plugs (between different speakers or components — as we often do ourselves), here’s a pro tip: add a very small drop of Loctite 222 Purple Low-Strength Threadlocker to the gold thread pattern on the middle of the banana plug, then screw on the outer colour-coded jacket tightly and allow to set for about 20 minutes. This will prevent the outer jacket from loosening gradually over time. 🔒
⚠️ Note 1: Make sure you have correctly installed your banana plug on your speaker wire before applying the purple threadlocker.
⚠️ Note 2: Please don’t use the stronger blue or red Loctite options — they will make it difficult or impossible to repurpose your banana plugs in the future should you wish to do so. Purple only! 💜
🔴⚫ Does it matter which jacket colour I use for which wire?
Yes — keeping your polarity consistent is important for proper stereo imaging and phase alignment between your speakers. Always use the red jacket for positive (+) and the black jacket for negative (-) on every connection. If you reverse polarity on one speaker but not the other, your stereo image will sound hollow and strangely “off” — a phenomenon sometimes called being “out of phase.” 🎶
🎯 Radique Audio banana plug installation — the bottom line
A successful Radique Audio banana plug installation really comes down to three things: strip and twist your wire cleanly, tighten the set screws firmly, and match your jacket colours to your polarity.
• 🧵 Strip back 1.5 cm and twist the strands tight.
• 🔩 Insert fully and tighten the set screws firmly.
• 🔴⚫ Red for positive, black for negative.
• 🧪 Tug-test before reinstalling the outer jacket.
Do that, and your Radique Audio banana plugs will deliver a clean, solid connection for years to come — whether you’re building a new system from scratch or upgrading bare-wire connections on your existing setup. 🎧
