US flagUS Customers — Understanding Import Tariffs

Updated: April 2026 — What You Need to Know Before You Order

Wondering about US import tariffs on audio ordered from Canada? You’re in the right place. We love our US customers — you make up a significant portion of our business, and we want to make sure you can buy from us with confidence and without surprises. The tariff landscape has changed dramatically since 2025, so here’s a clear, honest picture of what to expect — and how we can help minimize your costs. 🎶

⚠️ Important notice: US–Canada trade policy is actively evolving as of April 2026. The information on this page reflects our best understanding of current tariff rules, but rates and thresholds may shift with little notice. We’ll do our best to keep this page updated — and when in doubt, reach out to us directly before ordering. Remember: import duties and tariffs go to the US government and your carrier — not to Radique!

🌎 What should I expect when my order ships from Canada?

When your Radique purchase crosses into the US, it will go through a customs clearance process. This is routine — but unlike in the past, no shipment is duty-free anymore. The previous $800 USD de minimis exemption was permanently eliminated on August 29, 2025, meaning all shipments now require customs processing regardless of value.

The good news: the process is straightforward, and we have options to make it as smooth and affordable as possible for you. Depending on what you’re ordering and how it ships, your experience will look a little different — read on for the full picture.

💰 What fees will I need to pay?

Your total import charges will generally include three components:

1. Government duties/tariffs — varies by country of manufacture (see rates below)
2. Carrier brokerage fee — charged by UPS/FedEx/DHL for handling customs paperwork (varies by shipment value; not applicable for Canada Post shipments)
3. US customs processing surcharge — a small additional government fee

⚠️ Note on brokerage fees: Commercial carrier brokerage fees (UPS, FedEx, DHL) can be significant on lower-value shipments — representing a much higher percentage of the shipment value than on a $1,500 amplifier. This is one reason we recommend Canada Post + Zonos for Radique Audio orders (more on this below).

🌍 Current tariff rates by country of manufacture

Tariff rates vary depending on where your audio component was originally manufactured. Here are the current applicable rates as of April 2026:

Country of ManufactureVia Commercial Courier (UPS/FedEx)Via Canada Post (Postal)Notes
Japan Japan~10%~10%Most of our vintage gear
Germany Germany / France France / UK UK / Korea Korea~10%~10%Occasional vintage European/Asian pieces
China China — cables & copper products~70%+ ⚠️~10%Section 122 + Section 301 + fentanyl tariff + Section 232 copper surtax — all stack!
China China — connectors & electronics~30–50%~10%Section 122 + Section 301 + fentanyl tariff (copper surtax may not apply)
Canada Canada0%0%USMCA-exempt (e.g. our cherrywood cabinets)
USA United States0%0%US-made goods returning home are duty-free

⚠️ Why cables are the worst-case UPS scenario: Our Radique Audio cables are copper-based and China-origin, which means they get hit by four separate tariff layers when shipped via commercial courier — the Section 122 reciprocal tariff, the Section 301 China tariff, the fentanyl-related China surcharge, and the Section 232 copper derivative surtax. These stack on top of each other, resulting in a combined rate that can exceed 70% of the shipment value via UPS. Via Canada Post, the same cable faces a single flat 10% postal tariff. This is not a small difference — on a $40 cable, the UPS tariff cost alone could exceed the value of the product itself.

📊 Can you give me a real example?

Sure! Let’s say you’re buying a gorgeous 1970s vintage Marantz receiver listed at $1,000 USD (originally made in Japan), shipped via UPS:

Government tariff: ~10% = ~$100 USD
UPS brokerage fee: approximately $35–50 (based on shipment value)
Processing surcharge: $5–10
Estimated total import charges: ~$145–160 USD 📊

Now compare ordering a $60 CAD Radique Audio cable via UPS vs Canada Post + Zonos:
Via UPS: ~70%+ tariff stacking + brokerage fees = potentially $42+ CAD in tariffs and fees on a $60 item — before UPS even knocks on your door
Via Canada Post + Zonos: 10% tariff ($6.00) + Zonos fee (10% of $6.00 = $0.60 + $1.99 CAD) = roughly $8.59 CAD total in duties and fees

That’s a very significant difference — and exactly why we strongly recommend Canada Post + Zonos for all Radique Audio cable and connector orders. 📦

Note: All figures are estimates based on current rates as of April 2026. Actual fees may vary.

📦 What is the Canada Post + Zonos option, and how does it work?

For US customers ordering Radique Audio products — especially cables — we strongly recommend our Canada Post shipping + Zonos duty prepayment option. It gives you a dramatically lower tariff rate (10% flat vs potentially 70%+ via UPS for cables), no carrier brokerage fees, and complete cost transparency before we ship.

Step-by-step:

1. Place your order on our website — at checkout, select Canada Post as your shipping method and pay for shipping upfront as normal.
2. We’ll send you a payment link for a small follow-up invoice covering your Zonos duty prepayment — the 10% flat postal tariff on your order value, plus Zonos’s service fee of 10% of that tariff amount + $1.99 CAD. On most Radique Audio orders, this is a very modest charge compared to what UPS would cost you.
3. Once your Zonos invoice is paid, we generate your Canada Post label with your Zonos Declaration ID attached and ship your order.
4. Your package arrives fully duty-paid — no customs holds, no surprise carrier invoices, no brokerage fees. Just your gear. 🎉

💡 Tip: Canada Post rates are generally slightly higher than UPS for comparable shipments. However, the savings on the tariff and brokerage side — especially for cables — more than offset the postage difference in virtually every case.

🚚 Can I still choose UPS shipping?

Yes — and for some orders UPS is still the right call. Here’s the honest breakdown:

UPS works well when:
• You’re ordering primarily vintage/used audio gear (Japanese or other non-China origin) — the tariff rate is ~10% via either carrier, and UPS brokerage on a higher-value vintage shipment is reasonable relative to order value. Just place your order, select UPS at checkout, and UPS will contact you when your shipment reaches customs with payment instructions.
• You’re ordering a mix of vintage gear + some Radique Audio products — consolidating everything into one UPS shipment often saves on total shipping cost, and the higher tariff on the Radique Audio portion is a smaller percentage of the overall order value.

UPS gets very expensive when:
• You’re ordering Radique Audio cables only or primarily — the combination of four stacking tariff layers (potentially 70%+) plus UPS brokerage fees on a low-value shipment can result in fees that equal or exceed the value of the product itself. Canada Post + Zonos is strongly recommended here.
• You’re ordering Radique Audio connectors or electronics only — combined tariffs of 30–50% via UPS vs 10% via Canada Post is still a very meaningful difference on lower-value items.

Not sure which option makes the most sense for your specific order? Drop us a line — we’ll run the numbers for you and give you a straight answer. 😊

💳 Will I know my total landed cost before I commit?

Yes — always. Whether you choose UPS or Canada Post + Zonos, we’ll provide you with a complete cost breakdown (product + shipping + estimated duties and taxes) before you finalize your order. No surprises, no hidden fees.

For Canada Post + Zonos orders, duties are calculated to the penny by Zonos before we ship. For UPS orders, we provide estimated duty figures based on current tariff rates — the final amount is confirmed by US Customs at the border, but our estimates are typically very accurate.

🛡️ Do US customers get the same warranty and trade-back coverage?

Yes, absolutely! US customers receive the exact same Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty and are fully eligible for our Perpetual Trade-Back Program as our Canadian customers. The only difference is that return shipping costs for warranty claims are the customer’s responsibility — though we’re always happy to help arrange discounted prepaid shipping labels using our carrier volume rates. 😊

🎵 Why buy from Radique despite these fees?

We get it — nobody loves paying import duties! But remember what you’re getting:

Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty on vintage gear — virtually unheard of in the used audio market
Perpetual Trade-Back Program — your investment is protected, always
Expert refurbishment — we bring vintage audio back to life properly
Canada’s largest online selection of curated used and vintage audio components
Keeping gear from landfills — good for your soul AND the planet 🌍

Plus, finding that perfect vintage piece in excellent, fully tested condition locally? Good luck with that! 😉

And remember: import duties and carrier fees go to the US government and your shipping carrier — not to us. We’re just as excited as you are to get your new-to-you vintage audio into your hands. ✨
