How Our Bench Fees Work
Charged at intake, credited to your repair
Every service job starts with a bench fee when we take the unit in. It’s sized to the issues you describe and the type of component.
If you go ahead with the repair, the bench fee is applied to your final bill. If you decide not to proceed, the bench fee is retained to cover the diagnostic bench time.
Custom speaker cable builds are different: they’re fully prepaid when you order through our Custom Speaker Cable Builder.
From First Email to Final Sign-Off

We review the job and come back to you with a rough quote.
You drop the unit off and we take the bench fee, sized to the issues described and the component type.
We diagnose it on the bench and confirm the work with you. Go ahead, or decide not to proceed.
Most jobs are completed within 10 days to 4 weeks, depending on complexity and our service queue.
Every job is tested again by a different tech. If anything isn’t right, it goes back for another round.

Every used and vintage amplifier and receiver we sell lists its service level, so you can see the work it took to get there. Level 1, 2 or 3, every unit leaves the bench meeting the same performance standard — see what our service levels mean. Turntables, decks, disc players, tuners, speakers and subwoofers each follow their own bench standard, and every serviced unit passes a second bench test by a different tech before it’s listed.

What is a bench fee?
A bench fee is charged at intake on every service job. It’s sized to the issues you describe and the type of component. Most bench fees range from $45 to $195; high-value components or very large jobs are occasionally more. Custom speaker cable builds are prepaid through our Custom Speaker Cable Builder instead.
What happens to the bench fee if I go ahead with the repair?
It’s applied to your final bill, so you don’t pay it twice.
What if I decide not to proceed after diagnosis?
That’s your call. The bench fee is retained to cover the bench time spent diagnosing your unit, and you take the unit home.
Is there anything you don’t service?
We don’t take in tube gear, reel-to-reel decks, speakers over 80 lbs each, or micro-sized players. Walkman-size portable players are fine.
How long does a repair take?
Most jobs are completed within 10 days to 4 weeks, depending on complexity and our service queue. Custom wood veneer work typically takes 3 to 12 weeks.
