Description

A mid-1980s Nikko Alpha 230 stereo power amplifier, made in Japan, rated at 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms. It has been tested on our bench and is in very good condition.

What it is

The Alpha 230 is a well-regarded Nikko DC power amplifier from the years when the company was building some of its most serious gear. It is a straightforward, muscular design: a DC-servo amplifier with a variable-bias, non-switching output stage, rated at 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 200 watts per channel into 4 ohms, with distortion of just 0.008%.

The front panel is all business. A column of LED power meters reads output from a hundredth of a watt up to 240 watts, a protect lamp watches over the output stage, and A and B buttons switch between two pairs of speakers. There is a headphone jack on the front, and rack-mount ears either side if you want it in a rack.

On the back, a Direct/Normal switch selects the input. Direct is Nikko’s DC input, the one that gives the Alpha 230 its frequency response all the way down to 0 Hz. As a power amplifier it has no volume control of its own, so it pairs with a preamplifier, or with a receiver or integrated amplifier that has preamp outputs.

A well-regarded 120-watt Nikko power amplifier, tested and ready to drive your speakers.

Our best-selling Nikko models so far: the Beta 30 preamplifier and the Alpha 230 power amplifier, followed by the NT-700 II tuner and the Alpha 130 power amplifier.

The Nikko story

One of Nikko's first hi-fi products was the TRM-50 integrated amplifier of September 1969, and its STA receivers and FAM tuners followed in the early 1970s.

The Professional Series. From 1977 Nikko sold Alpha power amplifiers and Beta preamplifiers, designed to be paired, alongside NR receivers, Gamma and NT tuners and EQ graphic equalizers.

The end. The last Alpha models date from 1988 to 1991, and Nikko hi-fi ended in the early 1990s. It has no connection with Nikko, the radio-control toy maker.
