55 watts a channel at 0.02% distortion, out of Sony's Pulse Power Supply — a switching supply that replaced the usual heavy transformer, which is why this weighs under 17 pounds. MM and MC phono both, gold-plated, plus a preamp/power amp jumper on the back. Quartz PLL tuner with eight presets. Ottawa Valley cherry side panels fitted here; Level One serviced. AM auto-scan is not working; everything else is.

Fifty-five watts a channel into 8 ohms at 0.1% distortion, from a linear supply and a discrete output stage. Moving-magnet phono, variable loudness, A and B speaker outputs, and pre-out/main-in if you ever want to split it. The motorised volume works from the original Nakamichi remote, which comes with it. Cleaned, DeOxIT serviced and fully tested.

Fifty-five watts a channel into 8 ohms at 0.05% distortion, with response out to 50 kHz. Quartz-synthesised AM/FM tuning, a moving-magnet phono stage at 2.5 mV into 47 kilohms, a preamp output and A/B speaker switching. Built by Nippon Columbia between 1991 and 1993. The original Denon remote is included.
Sony 55 WPC Legato Linear Stereo Receiver, Serviced STR-VX5
55 watts a channel from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 0.007% distortion, out of Sony's Legato Linear circuit and a Pulse Power supply with a transformer a fiftieth the size of a conventional one. Gold-plated phono inputs take MM or MC, and the quartz tuner has eight presets with Memory Scan and Auto Sweep. Made in Japan, 1981-82. Freshly serviced and working perfectly.
Vintage Onkyo 55 WPC Stereo Receiver TX-38
Distortion of 0.04% across 20 Hz to 30 kHz, a damping factor of 35, and an MM phono stage at 2.5 mV input sensitivity — the phono is the reason to buy this one. Adjustable Dynamic Bass Expander, Stereo Image Expander, subsonic filter, loudness, A/B speakers and an unswitched AC outlet on the back. Made in Japan; 8.5 kg.
