Gorgeous Vintage Sony STR-5800SD 55 WPC Stereo Receiver with Custom Cherry Side Panels (Japan)
Design and Sound
This exceptional Japanese-manufactured Sony STR-5800SD vintage receiver with gorgeous custom cherry wood side panels has undergone our very thorough Level Two service and testing which should ensure many more years of reliable performance ahead. Originally retailing for $500 in 1977, this was Sony’s third-from-the-top receiver model and showcased the company’s commitment to engineering excellence with features that were advanced for its era.
The STR-5800SD delivers 55 watts per channel of pristine audio through Sony’s sophisticated amplifier design, but the real magic lies in its exceptional phono preamplifier stage, which High Fidelity Magazine rated “with the best we’ve experienced” for its uncanny ability to extract every nuance from vinyl records with crystalline clarity and rock-solid bass response. The advanced FM tuner section features multipath detection capability, allowing precise antenna positioning for optimal reception, plus Dolby FM decoding for enhanced dynamic range on compatible broadcasts.
This receiver offers remarkable versatility with three sets of speaker outputs selectable in multiple combinations, bidirectional tape dubbing capability between two deck positions, front-panel auxiliary override for temporary equipment connections, and an external processor loop for seamless integration of equalizers or decoders. The acoustic compensator provides four listening modes including bass boost and presence enhancement, while the sophisticated muting system eliminates inter-station noise during tuning. Now enhanced with beautiful cherry wood side panels, this Sony combines vintage Japanese precision engineering with contemporary aesthetic refinement.

Gold Plated Pin Connectors – Flexible Pins, Radique Audio
Made for spring clips and guillotine terminals, where bare wire frays and works loose. The pin flexes rather than sitting rigid, so it does not lever on a forty-year-old terminal, and two set screws hold the wire instead of one. Takes 12 to 18 AWG — 12 is a tight fit. Colour-coded non-conductive jackets and a textured grip. Sold in 1, 2, 4 or 10 pairs.

Sherwood S-8250 CP AM/FM Stereo Receiver 25 WPC
Twenty-five watts a channel into 8 ohms from Sherwood's Certified Performance series — the range where Sherwood printed the measured figures for the individual unit rather than for the model. MM phono, noise filter, mute/mono, loudness and A/B speakers, behind a brushed aluminium face with walnut-grain side panels. Level 2 serviced here: bias and DC offset set, every control deoxidised.
JVC JR-S201 Receiver – 35 WPC, Japan, SEA EQ, Excellent
Thirty-five watts a channel at 0.01% distortion with a damping factor of 70 — numbers most larger receivers of 1978 could not reach. A five-band S.E.A. graphic equalizer sits on the front panel at 40, 250, 1k, 5k and 15kHz, alongside MM phono, two tape loops and push-button speaker terminals. Made in Japan, arrived professionally serviced; cosmetically graded Excellent.
Pioneer SX-50 Silver Face Receiver – 50 WPC, Pre-Outs, 1983
Fifty watts a channel into 8 ohms at 0.007% distortion, and — unusually for a receiver this size — pre-out and main-in jacks on the back, so it can feed a subwoofer, take an equalizer in the loop, or hand off to a larger power amp. Introduced in 1983 with switchable CD and TV audio inputs, presets held by three AA cells, and the silver face of the decade that was ending. Graded Very Good.
Kenwood KR-A4070 Stereo Receiver – 60WPC, Phono, Original Remote
Sixty watts a channel into 8 ohms across the full band at 0.01% distortion, with an MM phono input at 2.5mV, a tape monitor loop, and separate bass, treble and balance. The original Kenwood remote is here, which is uncommon on a receiver of this age. Level 1 serviced; cosmetically graded Good, with honest wear for its years.
Sherwood S-7250 CP Stereo Receiver – 20WPC, Phono, Wood Cabinet
Twenty watts a channel into 8 ohms across the full 20 Hz to 20 kHz band, an MM phono input at 80 dB signal-to-noise, and a tape monitor loop. Sherwood built these in small runs in Chicago and sold them through the same shops that carried Marantz and McIntosh. Still in its original wood cabinet. Level 1 serviced here; condition Very Good.
