Marantz DV4300 Disc Player — CD, DVD, MP3 and JPEG Playback, 24-bit/96 kHz Conversion, Optical and Coaxial Digital Outputs

A slim, solidly built Marantz source component that handles CDs, DVDs and MP3 discs with equal composure, and measures well enough to earn its place in a serious two-channel system.

The Converter and the Numbers

The DV4300 comes from the period when Marantz was still applying its audio engineering to modestly priced components rather than reserving it for the flagship models. Marantz specified 24-bit, 96 kHz digital-to-analogue conversion here, and the resulting numbers bear the intent out: a 101 dB signal-to-noise ratio, 100 dB of dynamic range, and total harmonic distortion of 0.003 percent are figures many dedicated CD players of the era would have been pleased to publish. Frequency response reaches 4 Hz to 44 kHz on high-resolution material, and wow and flutter sits below the limit of measurement.

MP3 Playback

The MP3 capability is worth dwelling on, because it is the feature that separates this player from the good CD-only machines of the previous decade. A single MP3-encoded disc holds roughly ten hours of continuous music, which turns a stack of compilations into one disc and makes the DV4300 genuinely useful for background listening, parties, and long sessions where nobody wants to be up changing discs. Discs of JPEG images can be played back the same way. For anyone who has been keeping an older CD player going purely out of loyalty, this is the practical argument for the upgrade.

Digital Outputs and Video

As a transport, the player is equally well equipped. Both optical and coaxial digital outputs are fitted, carrying a true 96/24 signal, so the DV4300 can feed a modern DAC or an AV receiver directly and let the newer converter do the work. For those using the player on its own, a stereo analogue output on RCA jacks is provided. Video connections cover component, S-video and composite, with progressive scan and 3:2 pull-down detection for film-based material.

Practical Touches

Practical touches run throughout. The chassis is a slim 2.1 inches tall, so it slots into a crowded rack where a full-height player will not. A front-panel lock guards against accidental operation, a dimmer darkens the display, and the universal 100–240 V power supply means the player is at home on any mains supply in the world.

Condition and What Is Included

Cosmetically this example is in Good condition. The faceplate presents very nicely, with the wear concentrated on the top of the cabinet, which carries a fair bit of scratching — not something that will show in a rack or under another component, but stated here so there are no surprises. A brand-new compatible remote control is included, tested and confirmed to operate all primary functions.

Who This Suits

For anyone assembling a system around a good DAC or a capable receiver — or simply ready to retire a CD player that cannot read an MP3 disc — the DV4300 is an uncommonly sensible piece: Marantz build quality, measured performance well beyond what the price suggests, and a slim profile that fits where other players will not.
