Sony DVM60EXML MiniDV Tape – Excellence, Sealed, Made in Japan

Sony’s best MiniDV stock, sealed and unopened: Metal Evaporated tape with a diamond-like carbon coating that is there to resist shedding and dropout — the two failures that cannot be undone afterwards. Rated 2 dB better on carrier-to-noise than Sony Premium. Made in Japan, 60 minutes SP.

Sony DVM60EXML Excellence MiniDV Digital Video Cassette – 60 Minutes, Metal Evaporated, IC Memory Chip, Made in Japan, New Old Stock Sealed
Sealed, unopened Japanese-made Sony Excellence MiniDV tape — the top of the MiniDV range, and no longer made by anyone.
Why the Tape Stock Matters
If you shoot MiniDV or you are digitising a shelf of old tapes, the tape stock itself is the part that decides whether the footage survives. The Excellence was Sony’s best: Metal Evaporated tape with a diamond-like carbon protective coating, which is there specifically to resist shedding and dropout — the two failures that put blocky artefacts through a recording and cannot be undone afterwards. Sony rated it 2 dB better on carrier-to-noise than the Premium tape below it, which matters most in LP mode where the margin is thinnest.
Cassette Memory
It also carries a 4 kbit IC memory chip in the shell, so a camcorder that supports cassette memory can index and bookmark within the tape rather than shuttling blindly.
Why Sealed Japanese Stock Is Hunted
These are Japanese-made and factory sealed. That combination is the reason people hunt for them: MiniDV production ended years ago, later stock came from other plants, and archivists working through irreplaceable footage would rather put a Japanese Excellence in the transport than whatever turns up loose in a drawer.
Not Being Made Again
Blank MiniDV in this grade is not being manufactured again. If you have a camcorder you still use, or footage you still need to capture, these are worth putting aside now rather than looking for later.

GoldenEar ForceField 4 Subwoofer – Parts/Repair, Amp Needs Work
Sold as-is for parts or repair — the amplifier board requires service and is not represented as working. What is good: the cabinet, very good cosmetically with its non-parallel walls intact; the custom front-firing 10-inch long-throw woofer, tested and working; and the 11 by 13 inch quadratic planar down-firing passive radiator, undamaged. GoldenEar supplies a replacement amplifier board through its service channel.
Teac GE-20 2-Channel 10-Band Stereo Graphic Equalizer, Japan
Ten ISO-standard bands per channel from 31.5 Hz to 16 kHz at ±12 dB, with separate left and right sliders and switchable VU metering. Filters at 31.5 Hz and 16 kHz roll off rumble and ultrasonic noise without touching the audible band, and an EQ defeat switch lets you A/B against flat. Made in Japan, 1978; serviced, good cosmetic condition.
Pioneer DT-540 Audio Digital Timer – Made in Japan, 1983
Two switched AC outlets on a 24-hour schedule, accurate to a tenth of a second against line frequency, with a sleep function and a fluorescent display tube. Rated to 500 watts total — enough for a receiver, deck, turntable and tuner, but not a large power amplifier. Full component width at 16.5 inches. Very good condition, timer and clock both confirmed working.
Marantz SR6300 6.1-Ch AV Receiver 100 WPC — For Parts/Repair
Does not power on. Sold as-is for parts or repair, with no warranty and no trade-back. Cosmetically it presents very well, with no significant marks to the faceplate or cabinet. Working, it was a 100-watt-per-channel 6.1 receiver with Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES and a full set of 6.1 pre-outs. 32.7 lbs of bench project.
Yamaha Q2031 Dual 31-Band Graphic Equalizer – Made in Japan, 2U
Thirty-one bands per channel on ISO third-octave centres, 20Hz to 20kHz, on two fully independent channels — fine enough to pull a single room mode down without touching what sits either side of it. A range switch halves boost and cut to ±6dB for careful work, and the high-pass filters sweep from 20 to 200Hz. Balanced XLR and 1/4-inch throughout, 2U rack. Condition good.
Maxell UR 120 Blank Cassette – Normal Bias, Sealed
A hundred and twenty minutes of Maxell UR, normal bias Type I, still in its factory wrap. Sixty minutes a side is a full album with room left over. Type I is the default setting on every deck ever made, so there is nothing to select, and it is the correct tape for the 9.5 cm/s speed on a two-speed machine. Unopened, unused.

Onkyo TA-2040 Cassette Deck – Silver, Japan, For Parts/Repair
Sold as-is for parts or repair: multiple faults, not covered by our warranty, not eligible for trade-back, all sales final. What it is, is a 1980 Japanese-built two-head deck with a sendust head, full-logic transport, FG-servo motor and Dolby B — not economic for our bench, and a completely different arithmetic if you have a soldering iron.
