A sealed, unused Maxell UR — the everyday workhorse cassette that a generation of people recorded their lives onto, and still factory wrapped.

The UR was Maxell’s normal bias Type I tape, and it earned its reputation the honest way: it was the one you bought by the pack, and it simply worked. Reliable coating, well-made shell, consistent from tape to tape. At 120 minutes it gives a full hour a side, which is enough for a whole album with room to spare, or a long drive’s worth of music on one side.

Type I normal bias is the standard setting on every cassette deck ever built, so this works in anything without a thought about tape selection — and it is the correct choice for the high-speed 9.5 cm/s recording that a two-speed deck offers.
