Audionics of Oregon CC-2 Stereo Power Amplifier 70 WPC — USA
A Made-in-USA Audionics of Oregon CC-2 stereo power amplifier from 1977 — one of the most technically significant solid-state power amplifiers of the American Golden Age of Audio, Level One serviced, fitted with a new power cord, and in good cosmetic condition.
The CC-2 is not merely a fine-sounding amplifier — it is a historically important one. Designed by Bob Sickler in Portland, Oregon in 1977, it was among the first American solid-state amplifiers to be built around Matti Otala’s groundbreaking research on Transient Intermodulation Distortion (TIM). While the mainstream amplifier industry of the 1970s was focused almost entirely on minimizing Total Harmonic Distortion through heavy negative feedback, Otala had demonstrated that this approach actually introduced a more musically damaging form of distortion — TIM — that standard THD measurements could not detect. The CC-2 was engineered from the ground up to eliminate TIM by radically limiting negative feedback and maximizing slew rate, producing a sonic character that audiophiles of the era described as immediately more natural, open, and lifelike than competing designs with superior numbers on paper. That character remains fully intact today.
At 70 watts per channel into 8 ohms, the CC-2 operates with a confidence and authority that its power rating consistently undersells. The combination of a very large split-core power transformer — estimated at 600–650 VA, generously oversized for a 70-watt design — and a high slew rate of 36 V/µsec means the amplifier tracks musical transients with precision and reproduces dynamic peaks without compression or hardness. Into 4 ohms the output rises to 120 watts per channel, and in bridged mono configuration the CC-2 delivers a formidable 225 watts into 8 ohms — making it equally useful as a subwoofer or monoblock driver in more demanding installations. Over 2,000 units were sold at the time, and a significant proportion remain in daily use by audiophiles who have heard what the design does and have no interest in replacing it.
This unit has undergone our Level One service and testing which should ensure many more years of reliable performance ahead. A new power cord has been fitted.
