Onkyo was founded in Osaka in 1946 by Takeshi Godai as Osaka Denki Onkyo, and the name was shortened to Onkyo in 1971. We carry Onkyo AV receivers and stereo receivers, cassette decks and CD players. We’ve had more than 60 Onkyo listings so far, covering more than 50 different models. Every AV receiver we list is tested input by input on our bench: each HDMI input and output, the analog, optical and coaxial inputs, the subwoofer outputs and the wireless features where it has them. Every used Onkyo here is inspected, tested and serviced as required, then photographed in-house and covered by our Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty and Perpetual Trade-Back Program. The Onkyo story, 1946 to today
Takeshi Godai, who Onkyo says had headed Matsushita Electric’s speaker factory, founded Osaka Denki Onkyo in Osaka in 1946. Stereophile translates the name as “Osaka Electric Sound Harmony”, and the company shortened it to Onkyo in 1971.
Integra and home theatre. Onkyo’s Integra amplifier line began in 1969, and by the 1990s, Stereophile says, Onkyo had become a well-regarded home theatre brand.
Pioneer joins. In March 2015 Onkyo took over Pioneer‘s home AV business, and both brands carried on under their own names.
New owners. In September 2021 the Onkyo and Integra brands passed to a joint venture of VOXX’s Premium Audio Company and Sharp, which builds the products. The old Onkyo company in Japan filed for bankruptcy in May 2022, after the brands had been sold. Gentex bought VOXX in April 2025, and Onkyo says its research and development is still in Osaka.

TX stereo receivers: a long run from the 1970s to today, such as the TX-830 of the late 1980s and the TX-8030 of 2011.
TX-SV and TX-DS home theatre receivers (1990s to about 2001): for example the TX-SV 454 and the TX-DS484.
TX-SR receivers (from 2002): such as the TX-SR502 (about 2004 to 2005) and the TX-SR706 (about 2008 to 2009).
TX-NR network receivers (2010s): with network and streaming features, such as the TX-NR626 (about 2013 to 2014).
TX-RZ receivers (from 2016): the newer flagships.
DX-C CD changers: from the DX-C210 of 1993 onward.

Distortion of 0.04% across 20 Hz to 30 kHz, a damping factor of 35, and an MM phono stage at 2.5 mV input sensitivity — the phono is the reason to buy this one. Onkyo 275 Watt 5.1 AVR w/ Phono & Remote TX-DS494
Fifty-five FTC-rated watts to each of five channels, with Onkyo's low-impedance drive and Wide-Range Amplifier Technology behind them. A phono input for a turntable, which is rare at this price, three assignable digital inputs, a 5.1 direct input and dual-banana binding posts on every channel rather than clips. Brushed anodized aluminum front panel. Original Onkyo remote included.
Onkyo SKC-540C Center Speaker – Dual 5″ Woofers, 130W, Silver
Two 5-inch OMF cone woofers either side of a 1-inch balanced dome, crossed at 4.5 kHz — well above where voices sit, so speech stays on one driver instead of being handed between two. Seventeen inches wide and 8.4 lbs, magnetically shielded, response 55 Hz to 50 kHz. From Onkyo's SKS-HT540 series, in the less common silver with a matching grille. Graded Good.
Onkyo TX-NR609 7.2 AV Receiver – 2011, For Parts/Repair
Sold as-is for parts or repair, with no warranty and no trade-back: a relay clicks repeatedly but it never powers on, and our senior tech was uncertain it could be repaired. A 2011 Onkyo 7.2 receiver for a donor or a troubleshooting project.

Onkyo TA-2040 Cassette Deck – Silver, Japan, For Parts/Repair
Sold as-is for parts or repair: multiple faults, not covered by our warranty, not eligible for trade-back, all sales final. What it is, is a 1980 Japanese-built two-head deck with a sendust head, full-logic transport, FG-servo motor and Dolby B — not economic for our bench, and a completely different arithmetic if you have a soldering iron.
