Onkyo TA-RW404 — A Twin Deck from the Years When Onkyo Still Built Them Properly, Auto Reverse and Dolby B/C

By the early 1990s, most twin cassette decks had become lightweight conveniences — plastic shells built to a price. Onkyo went the other way. The TA-RW404 is a twin deck in a metal case that weighs over twelve pounds, built between 1991 and 1993 with four motors across its two transports and the company’s usual refusal to make anything flimsy. Pick it up and the difference from the department-store machines is immediate.

Two Transports, One Job Each

The layout is the practical one: two transports, with deck B handling both recording and playback and deck A dedicated to playback — so you can dub tape to tape, including at high speed, or record onto a fresh cassette while your source tape plays. Auto reverse means sides flip themselves, and an automatic tape selector reads Type I, chrome, and metal formulations without you touching a switch.

Dolby B and C

Dolby B and C noise reduction cover everything from decades-old albums recorded in B to the quieter C recordings of the deck’s own era, and the numbers are respectable for a twin transport: wow and flutter at 0.07%, response to 17 kHz on metal tape, 78 dB signal-to-noise with Dolby C engaged.

Onkyo System Remote

Remote jacks on the rear link it to a compatible Onkyo receiver, so the deck follows the rest of an Onkyo system from one remote. And at just under eighteen inches wide it sits in a standard rack looking exactly like what it is — the serious version of the everyday cassette machine.

Condition

Tested here and working properly. Cosmetically this example is graded Very Good — it presents well, with only the standard signs of use.
