23.5-Inch Speaker Stands — Real Mass, Concealed Cable Routing, and the Height a Bookshelf Speaker Actually Wants

Why Stands Matter
Most bookshelf speakers are sold with more attention paid to the speaker than to what it stands on, which is backwards. A bookshelf speaker on a bookshelf is a compromised speaker: the shelf below it reflects, the wall behind it loads the port, and the cabinet transmits its own energy into whatever is under it. Putting the same speaker on a proper stand, at the right height, in free air, is the single largest improvement most people can make without buying anything that plugs in.
Mass, Base and Cable Routing
These do the job three ways. The pillar is hollow and routes the speaker cable internally, so the run from amplifier to terminal disappears into the base and emerges at the top — no loop of wire down the back, nothing to catch a foot or spoil a tidy room. The base is a wide 10 by 12 inches against a 6 by 6 inch top plate, which is the right way round: a broad footprint under a narrow platform resists the rocking that a tall stand otherwise transmits straight back into the cabinet. And at 12.4 lbs each they have real mass, roughly double what a light stand of this height weighs, which is mass that stays still while the driver moves.
Fillable, Left Empty on Purpose
The pillar is also fillable, which is where the last of the available mass lives. Sand or shot goes in through the same aperture the cable passes through, so the order matters: run the cable first, then fill, and it packs around it without blocking anything. Kiln-dried sand only — damp sand corrodes a steel column from the inside — and the usual advice is two-thirds to three-quarters full rather than to the brim. We have deliberately left them empty. Fill is a matter of taste, it is messy to reverse, and it commits you to whichever cable you filled around, so it is a decision that belongs to whoever ends up using them.
The Height
Twenty-three and a half inches is a well-chosen height. It puts the tweeter of a typical bookshelf speaker close to seated ear level on a normal sofa, which is where a two-way wants to be — off-axis vertically is where the crossover region falls apart, and getting the height right costs nothing and fixes more than most upgrades.
Fitted Felt Pads
They come to you fitted with Radique Audio High Density Felt Pads in our signature Magenta, a full 5 mm of dense felt rather than the fluffy sort that compresses and slides. Those protect hardwood from the marks that steel bases leave, and take a little of what the stand collects out of the floor.
Measure Your Speakers
One practical note, because it is easier to measure now than after they arrive: the top plate is 6 by 6 inches. Most bookshelf speakers are deeper than that and will overhang slightly at the back, which is normal and intended — a small plate presents less reflective surface beside the cabinet — but it is worth knowing rather than discovering.
A stand that gets the height right, keeps the cable out of sight, and already has enough mass to stay where you put it before you add a grain of anything.

Camber Laser 3 Bookshelf Speakers – Made in Ottawa, Canada
Built in Ottawa, a short drive from where they now sit. A 6.5-inch Audax mid-bass on a translucent polypropylene cone and a 1-inch dome with a centre diffusor, in light grey bezels against a dark cabinet. Two-way rear-ported, 8 ohms, 10 to 100 watts, spring clips on the back — give them room off the wall. Grilles included; very good condition.

An 8-inch woofer in a cabinet small enough to sit on a stand — a 210 mm ICP cone on a die-cast chassis, with a third-generation titanium dome on the Studio-series waveguide faceplate, crossed at 2.0 kHz. Low frequency extension to 38 Hz and 91 dB room sensitivity, so 15 watts drives them and 150 is just headroom. Built in Canada, in Black Ash. Very good condition.
