Design and Drivers

Made in England, the Bowers & Wilkins DM602 S3 is the largest and most capable two-way bookshelf in B&W’s storied DM600 Series 3 lineup — a genuinely imposing standmount that delivers dynamics, bass authority, and sonic scale that smaller speakers simply cannot match.

The DM602 S3 was B&W’s deliberate counter to the industry trend toward ever-smaller cabinets. Its 180mm woven Kevlar cone bass/midrange driver — a material B&W has refined and championed since the 1970s — operates in a generously braced enclosure that allows it to breathe, move air, and deliver low-frequency extension and dynamic headroom that a compact two-way must work far harder to approximate. The tweeter incorporates a tubular loading chamber derived directly from B&W’s flagship Nautilus development — minimizing backwave reflections on the dome — and a stiffened voice coil to dome bond that pushes usable high-frequency range well beyond 20 kHz. Crossover capacitors were hand-selected after extensive listening tests, a level of design care rarely seen at this price point.

The cabinet itself is a dual-skinned construction: the outer baffle is moulded from mica-filled polypropylene, chosen for its combination of rigidity and acoustic damping, with rounded vertical edges that reduce diffraction and contribute to the DM602 S3’s unusually precise imaging for a speaker of its dimensions. The FlowPort — a dimpled, tapered front-firing reflex port — minimizes turbulence and port noise, and foam plugs are included for optional port damping. Dual pairs of gold-plated five-way binding posts support full bi-wiring or bi-amping. What Hi-Fi? revisited the DM602 S3 years after its release and concluded that these “big old standmounters” remained “great fun to listen to” with impressive bass agility, punch, and dynamic scale — a tribute to how well-conceived the original engineering was.
