Description

A Garrard SL65B automatic turntable from around 1970, made in England, in a real wood plinth with a lift-off dust cover. It has been fully serviced by our turntable technician and fitted with a new Audio-Technica stylus.

What it is

The SL65B is one of Garrard’s Synchro-Lab automatic turntables, and the name comes from its motor. A Synchro-Lab synchronous motor takes its speed from the frequency of your household current rather than its voltage, so the platter holds speed when the line voltage dips. A rubber idler wheel carries the drive from the motor to the platter, the classic Garrard arrangement. Garrard’s gold lion Synchro-Lab badge sits on the deck.

It is fully automatic. One lever, marked MANUAL and AUTO, runs everything. Set to AUTO, it lowers the arm onto the record, plays it, then returns the arm and switches itself off. Set to MANUAL, you place the arm yourself. A viscous-damped cueing lever lifts the arm and sets it down gently whenever you want to pause or start partway through a side. It comes set up for single-record play, with its short spindle fitted and a spare stored in the plinth.

It plays 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm, and the same selector sets the record size, for 12-inch LPs, 7-inch singles and 10-inch 78s, so the arm sets down at the edge of the record.

The tonearm is a low-mass tubular aluminum arm, dynamically balanced with an adjustable counterweight. It has an adjustable anti-skating control and a built-in stylus-pressure gauge, so tracking force can be set and checked right on the deck.

The real wood plinth is more than a box. The deck rides on a suspension inside it, which helps keep bumps and vibration away from the platter and arm. Along one side there is a storage compartment with a lift-off wooden lid, which holds the spare spindle.

The service it has had

Fully serviced by our turntable technician. The automatic mechanism was serviced so the arm returns and the deck switches itself off at the end of play, a new Audio-Technica stylus was fitted, and the dust cover was polished.

Condition

Very Good, and free of significant marks. The real wood plinth is especially attractive, and the lift-off dust cover has been polished.

A British idler-drive automatic in a handsome real wood plinth, serviced and ready to play your records.
