A vintage Dual 504 belt-drive turntable, made in Germany in the late 1970s, in a real wood plinth in walnut with a smoked dust cover, fitted with an Ortofon FF15XE MkII cartridge, fully tested on our bench and in very good condition.
What it is
Dual built the 504 from 1976 to 1979 as a straightforward, well-engineered semi-automatic belt-drive turntable. A Dual 8-pole synchronous motor drives the platter through a precision flat belt and reaches 33⅓ rpm in about two seconds. The platter is non-magnetic, dynamically balanced and detachable, 304 mm across and 1.3 kg, and a stroboscope with pitch control lets you see and set the speed exactly for both 33⅓ and 45 rpm.
The tonearm is a torsion-resistant tubular aluminum arm in a four-point gimbal bearing, the kind of arm Dual was known for, with a removable cartridge holder that takes any standard half-inch cartridge and has adjustable overhang. It is attractive, easy to use, and sounds excellent, with a full and deep range.
The cartridge is an Ortofon FF15XE MkII with an elliptical diamond stylus. The elliptical tip traces fine high-frequency detail better than a basic conical stylus, and with a healthy 6 mV output and medium compliance it suits a standard phono input on a receiver or amplifier and arms like this one.
