NEC NSP-5350E Belt-Drive Turntable – Auto-Return, Serviced

An NEC NSP-5350E belt-drive turntable with automatic return, made in Japan, a solidly built deck in a rich wooden plinth with a smoked dust cover. It has had a thorough round of work on our bench, listed in full below, and it is in very good condition.

What it is

NEC is best known for its electronics and computers, and this is an extremely rare model: after a thorough search, we have been unable to find a single reference to it online. The NSP-5350E is a belt-drive player with automatic return, as the badge on its front says. You lower the arm onto the record with the cue lever, and at the end of a side the arm lifts and returns to its rest by itself. A REJECT control ends play early whenever you like.

The platter has an aluminum rim and a ribbed rubber mat. The S-shaped tonearm has a counterweight and sits beside the cue and REJECT controls, and the turntable’s two control knobs sit at the front left of the deck. It plays 33⅓ and 45 rpm records, is fitted with an Audio-Technica cartridge, and works with any receiver or amplifier that has a standard MM phono input.

The work we did on it

This one came to us without a cartridge, so we started from the stylus up:

• An Audio-Technica cartridge fitted, and the tonearm adjusted and set up
• Bench-tested: it plays well, the automatic return works, and the lid hinges hold the dust cover up
• Upgraded with a new power cord
• The ground lead fitted with a spade terminal, for a secure connection at your amplifier
• Bench-tested again with the new cord in place

Condition

Very Good, and free of significant marks, with its smoked dust cover and wooden plinth.

A handsome, solidly built and rare NEC, fully sorted and ready to play.
