What is good: the cabinet, very good cosmetically with its non-parallel walls intact; the custom front-firing 10-inch long-throw woofer, tested and working; and the 11 by 13 inch quadratic planar down-firing passive radiator, undamaged. The final 6.5-inch version of the speaker that made PSB's name — the 1998 Alpha A/V, with the upgraded tweeter, crossover and banana-plug terminals, and magnetic shielding so it can sit right beside a screen. Ninety decibels sensitive, so a modest receiver drives them well. Black ash, graded Very Good, bench-tested here. Pair.
Sony TAE-20FB Falcon Preamplifier — Bronze, MM/MC Phono, Japan
The control amplifier from Sony's short-lived Falcon range — made in Japan for barely two years and rarely seen on this side of the Pacific. Bronze-anodised aluminium case, a real moving-coil phono input alongside moving-magnet, and a signal path that has been freshly recapped. A couple of light marks on the casework, otherwise Very Good.
