A Canadian-made stand-mounted speaker with a full 8-inch woofer, which is what separates the Monitor 3 from every compact bookshelf it gets shelved beside.
The 8-Inch Woofer
Most bookshelf speakers stop at six and a half inches, and the bass stops with them. The Monitor 3 was Paradigm’s answer to that: a 210-mm ICP cone on a die-cast chassis, loaded by a quasi-third-order resistive port firing from the rear, in a cabinet still small enough to sit on a stand. Low frequency extension runs to 38 Hz, and the response holds within 2 dB from 56 Hz all the way to 20 kHz. That is genuine low end from a speaker you can put behind a sofa rather than beside one, and it is the reason people who owned these tend to talk about them years later.
What Changed at v3
The v3 generation is the one to have. When Paradigm replaced the v2 in May 2002 the headline change was the high frequency driver: a third-generation 25-mm pure-titanium dome mounted on the Waveguide faceplate developed for the company’s Studio series. The mid/bass drivers were redesigned at the same time with new motor structures, bullet dust caps and larger magnets, which is where the extra sensitivity and the tighter, more defined bass come from. The crossover is third-order electro-acoustic at 2.0 kHz.
Amplifier Matching
They are also easy to live with electrically. Room sensitivity is 91 dB, the load is compatible with 8 ohms, and Paradigm rates them for anything from 15 to 150 watts, so a modest integrated drives them properly and a larger amplifier is simply headroom. Connection is through Paradigm’s own 5-way binding posts, which take banana plugs, spades or bare wire.

Designed, engineered and built in Canada at Paradigm’s Mississauga facility, and finished in Black Ash.

Sixteen and a half pounds each, which is where the 50 Hz comes from — this is a full-size bookshelf, not a satellite in a bigger box. The 6-inch PolyPlas woofer is viscous polymer over a corrugated cellulose base, crossed at 4 kHz to a three-quarter-inch titanium-laminate dome through JBL's Straight-Line Signal Path network. Two sets of gold-plated 5-way posts, so bi-wireable. Very good condition.

Built in Ottawa, a short drive from where they now sit. A 6.5-inch Audax mid-bass on a translucent polypropylene cone and a 1-inch dome with a centre diffusor, in light grey bezels against a dark cabinet. Two-way rear-ported, 8 ohms, 10 to 100 watts, spring clips on the back — give them room off the wall. Grilles included; very good condition.

MartinLogan Motion 15 Bookshelf Speakers – Folded Motion, Boxed
The reason to want these is the tweeter — MartinLogan's Folded Motion driver is a pleated ribbon rather than a dome, so it squeezes air out from between its pleats and barely has to move. A 5.25-inch aluminium cone below it, 92 dB sensitivity, and the high-gloss black clean of the swirls these show so readily. Original boxes included.

Two things to tell you: a ding on the top side edge of one cabinet, and third-party binding posts a previous owner fitted to one speaker. Otherwise good — and the design is the interesting part, since Mission's inverted geometry puts the tweeter below the woofer to bring the two into step at seated ear height. Made in England.
