Nikko Alpha 600 — 180 Watts a Channel from the End of Nikko’s Run
A genuinely high-power Japanese power amplifier from the end of Nikko’s run, built for the listener who wants substantial reserves on tap and has speakers worth feeding.
Nikko produced the Alpha 600 between 1988 and 1991, and it sat near the top of a range the company had been refining for a decade. It delivers 180 watts per channel into 8 ohms continuous, rising to roughly 200 watts per channel into 4 ohms. That is real power by any standard, and it arrives from a proper two-channel power amplifier rather than a receiver making compromises to fit a tuner and a preamplifier into the same box.
Fan Cooling and Rack Mounting
Two features set it apart from the ordinary. The amplifier is fan cooled, which is unusual in domestic equipment and tells you something about the design intent — it was built to hold its rated output rather than to reach it briefly and then retreat. And it provides a polarity inversion facility, allowing absolute phase to be flipped without rewiring speakers, which matters to listeners who have found that some recordings simply sound more convincing one way round than the other.
Condition
On condition, the part you will actually look at is in good shape. The front face presents well, and in a rack or on a shelf that is the whole of what anyone sees. The top of the chassis is a different story: it is heavily scratched, and that is worth saying plainly rather than leaving it to be discovered. With another component or a shelf above it, the top simply is not in view — and none of the marking has any bearing on how the amplifier performs. This is a workhorse, priced and presented as one.
Condition and Service
This unit has been recently serviced, and has been thoroughly inspected and tested to confirm full functionality.
Rack Dimensions
The width is the standard EIA rack dimension and the height is a standard 3U space, so this will drop straight into a rack if that is how you run things. On a shelf, allow 16 to 17 inches of depth rather than the 14.25 the chassis measures — the rear connections and cable bends need the difference.
Why This One
Made in Japan, and a straightforward way to put serious power behind a pair of speakers that deserve it. Available now.
