Technics SU-V6X — 100 Watts a Channel, MC and MM Phono, Class AA
A serious, heavyweight Japanese integrated amplifier from Technics’ most technically ambitious period, offering genuine high power, a full moving coil phono stage, and measured performance that still reads impressively four decades on.
Technics called the SU-V6X a Computer Drive New Class A amplifier, and the specification sheet earns the marketing. It delivers 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms — and, unusually, the same 100 watts into 4 ohms, which speaks to a power supply built with headroom rather than optimism. Total harmonic distortion is quoted at 0.003 percent at rated power across the full audio band, falling to 0.001 percent at half power. Damping factor is 80 into 8 ohms. These are not the numbers of a starter amplifier.
The DC Design
The frequency response is where the DC design shows itself: 0.7 Hz to 140 kHz at minus 3 dB through the line inputs. Within the audible band the amplifier is essentially ruler-flat, quoted at 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.2 dB.
The Phono Stage
The phono stage is a full dual-standard design handling both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, with the moving coil input sensitive enough for genuinely low-output cartridges. A 30 Hz subsonic filter is provided to control woofer excursion from warped records — the kind of provision that tells you the designers expected this amplifier to be used with a serious turntable.
Inputs and Sources
Connectivity is exceptionally generous. Beyond phono, there are dedicated inputs for tuner, CD, TV/Aux, and Video/Aux, plus two complete tape loops with dubbing between them. A separate graphic equaliser loop with independent output and input allows an external equaliser or signal processor to be inserted into the chain, or the amplifier’s preamplifier and power sections to be used separately. Two pairs of speaker outputs, main and remote, are provided.
Radique-Fitted Enhancements
This example has been fitted with high quality five-way binding posts in place of the original speaker connectors. It is a meaningful practical upgrade: five-way posts accept banana plugs, spade lugs, pin connectors or bare wire, grip properly, and make a far better electrical connection than the factory arrangement. For anyone running decent speaker cable, it removes the single most common frustration owners have with this model.
Condition and Service
This unit has been recently serviced, and has been thoroughly inspected and tested to confirm full functionality.
Why This One
Made in Japan, substantial in the hand at over 24 pounds, and specified to a standard that comfortably outruns its modest reputation — a genuinely capable amplifier for a system built around vinyl and real speakers. Available now.

MartinLogan Motion 15 Bookshelf Speakers – Folded Motion, Boxed
The reason to want these is the tweeter — MartinLogan's Folded Motion driver is a pleated ribbon rather than a dome, so it squeezes air out from between its pleats and barely has to move. A 5.25-inch aluminium cone below it, 92 dB sensitivity, and the high-gloss black clean of the swirls these show so readily. Original boxes included.
Paradigm Monitor 3 v3 Bookshelf Speakers – 8″ Woofer, Canada
An 8-inch woofer in a cabinet small enough to sit on a stand — a 210 mm ICP cone on a die-cast chassis, with a third-generation titanium dome on the Studio-series waveguide faceplate, crossed at 2.0 kHz. Low frequency extension to 38 Hz and 91 dB room sensitivity, so 15 watts drives them and 150 is just headroom. Built in Canada, in Black Ash. Very good condition.

PSB Alpha B Bookshelf Speakers – Metal Grilles, Made in Canada
A 5.25-inch polypropylene woofer under a 0.75-inch aluminium dome in a rear-ported cabinet just 6.5 inches wide, with perforated steel grilles that survive children and pets. 89 dB anechoic, 91 dB in room. This is the nineteenth pair through our doors since 2018. Graded fair because one cabinet has been repaired — that is the only reason it sits below our usual $195. Both drivers are good and the pair images properly.

A 1987 New Class A integrated: pure Class A at low levels, sliding to Class A/B when the music asks for it, 100 watts a channel into 8 ohms at 0.05% distortion. It draws about 30 watts at idle, which is how you know the Class A bias is real rather than a label. MM phono and A/B speaker switching. Level 1 serviced; good cosmetic condition.

LXI AM4002 Integrated Amplifier 80 WPC (est), Dual Phono
Sold through Sears in the late seventies and heavier than that suggests — 22.9 lb, a 450 VA power rating, and metal knobs on everything. No factory manual survives, so the 80 WPC is our own conservative estimate. Level 1 serviced here; good cosmetic condition.
