A true dual-mono power amplifier from the era when Rotel built its reputation on outperforming its price, offering 50 watts per channel in stereo or 150 watts bridged into mono.

What Dual Mono Actually Means

Dual mono is a term used loosely by a great many manufacturers and honestly by very few. The RB-850 earns it: two separate power transformers, one per channel, with independent supplies feeding each side. The practical result is channel separation that does not collapse when the music gets busy, and a soundstage with genuine width and front-to-back depth rather than the flat panorama a shared supply tends to produce. Owners have kept these amplifiers in service for thirty years for exactly this reason.

The Numbers Behind It

The numbers behind that are unusually good for the class. Signal-to-noise sits at 116 dB, damping factor at 280 across the audio band, and frequency response runs from 15 Hz to 100 kHz. A high damping factor is what allows a modestly rated amplifier to keep a firm grip on a woofer, and it is a large part of why the RB-850 drives real speakers with more authority than fifty watts on paper would suggest.

Bridgeable to 150 Watts Mono

A rear-panel switch bridges the two channels into a single 150-watt mono amplifier, which makes this a sensible foundation for a system that grows: run it in stereo now, add a second later and bridge the pair into monoblocks. Acquiring that second one is left as an exercise for the reader. Speaker load impedance is rated from 4 to 16 ohms, so it is comfortable with demanding loads, and input sensitivity of 1 volt into 27k ohms pairs cleanly with any modern preamplifier, DAC or processor with pre-outs. It was originally partnered with Rotel’s RC-850 control amplifier, but it will take a signal from anything.

Worth knowing what this design costs today. Rotel still builds a stereo power amplifier on the same principle — the current RB-1552 MkII, with independent left and right rectification and decoupling in what Rotel describes as essentially a monoblock layout, sells for $1,499 CAD (approx. US$1,065) new at Canadian dealers. It is a more powerful and thoroughly revised amplifier, not the same thing. But it puts a number on what buying into this design idea costs in 2026.

Condition and Service

This example arrived professionally serviced, and has been thoroughly inspected and tested in-house to confirm full functionality. Cosmetically it is graded Very Good, presenting cleanly with only the modest wear expected of a well-kept amplifier of this age.

Genuine dual-mono construction is rare at any price and almost unheard of at this one. Whether it drives your main system now or becomes half of a bridged monoblock pair later, this is a serious amplifier with room to grow into.
