Where the Model 02 Sits in Thiel’s Story
Thiel Audio began in 1976, and the Model 02 is where it started — a two-way ported bookshelf system built before the sloped baffles and Coherent Source engineering that later made the company famous. That matters for what this speaker is and isn’t. It is not a CS-series Thiel and does not pretend to be. It is the founding-era design, made in small numbers, and it is the reason there was a company at all.
Design Philosophy
Thiel’s approach even then was to chase total performance rather than a single headline figure, and the Model 02 shows it. Relatively small drivers were chosen deliberately, for transient response, broad dispersion and uniform power response rather than for a big number on a spec sheet. The 6.5-inch woofer handles midrange detail properly, which allowed Thiel to place the crossover high — above the ear’s most critical range — instead of splitting the band where the ear is least forgiving. The one-inch soft dome tweeter carries cleanly to 20,000 Hz.
Bass and Cabinet Tuning
Bass comes from a front-firing port with fourth-order Butterworth tuning to 45 Hz, working with a long-throw voice coil on that small woofer. The result is more low end than a cabinet this size has any right to produce, and it arrives tight rather than loose, which is the harder trick. Front porting also makes these genuinely practical to live with: a rear-ported speaker pushed close to a wall or set into a shelf will bloat and boom, while these can be placed where the room actually allows without the bass turning to mud.
Connections
Connection is via five-way binding posts, which take banana plugs, spades, pins or bare wire, so they will accept whatever cable you already own and are ready for a proper set if you don’t.
Condition
These are graded Good cosmetically, and here is exactly what that means. From the front, top and sides — everything you actually see in a room — they present very well, and the walnut shows properly. The wear is at the back: the rear corners have rounded off and there are dings along the rear edges. It is honest cabinet wear on a fifty-year-old speaker, it faces the wall, and it is the reason these are priced where they are rather than where a clean pair would be. Cabinet integrity is unaffected and the drivers are excellent. The pair has been thoroughly inspected and tested in-house to confirm full functionality.
Founding-era pieces from a company that mattered do not come around often, and the Model 02 is scarce even by that standard. A pair of American-made, hand-veneered two-ways from 1976, in a wood that can no longer be sourced and still performing properly, priced at what a common modern bookshelf costs — take the cosmetic wear at the back and the rest is a genuine piece of loudspeaker history.

On an outdoor speaker the condition is the whole story — these are almost never retired for how they sound, but for sun turning a white cabinet chalky and yellow, freeze-thaw working at the seams, and grilles blooming with rust. Pearl White shows all of it more plainly than black would, and this pair grades Very Good, factory wall brackets included. B&W did not design a weatherproof box and then find a driver to fit it either: a 130 mm woven fibreglass cone crossed at 3.5 kHz to a 25 mm dome, the same material philosophy as their indoor speakers.
