Substantial, well-made bookshelf speakers from JBL’s Northridge E Series, with the easy dynamic confidence the brand is known for — and a connection panel well above what this class usually offers.

At 16.5 lbs each these are a genuine mid-size bookshelf rather than a small satellite pretending to be one, and the extra cabinet volume is exactly where the low end comes from. They reach down to 50Hz, which is deeper than most speakers of this footprint manage, and they do it without the thin, strained quality that afflicts smaller boxes asked to work hard.

The 6-inch woofer uses JBL’s patented PolyPlas cone — a layer of viscous polymer applied over a corrugated cellulose base, which gives the stiffness needed for clean bass along with the internal damping that keeps the midrange free of ringing. Above it sits a three-quarter-inch titanium-laminate dome tweeter, crossing over at 4kHz.

Between them is JBL’s Straight-Line Signal Path network, a deliberately simple crossover built on the principle that the less circuitry the signal passes through, the more of it survives to the drivers. The cabinet is ported with JBL’s FreeFlow flared design, which reduces the chuffing that plagues straight-cut ports when the bass gets demanding.

Each speaker carries dual sets of gold-plated five-way binding posts — four posts per cabinet rather than two — joined by removable jumpers. That is a genuine bi-wire and bi-amp capable connection panel, and it is not something you often find at this level. Run them conventionally today with the jumpers in place, and the option to bi-wire or bi-amp is waiting whenever you want it, with no need to change speakers to get there. The posts accept bare wire, spades or bananas.

There is real headroom too. Rated at 70 watts continuous, they will absorb 280-watt peaks without complaint, and they will take up to 125 watts of amplifier. At 88dB sensitivity and a straightforward 8-ohm load they are undemanding to drive, and any competent receiver will do them justice.

Both drivers are magnetically shielded, which makes these an easy choice near a television or other sensitive equipment.

Cosmetically this pair is in very good condition, with clean cabinets and grilles in good order.
