Sound Dynamics Concert Monitor 1000 Tower Speakers – Rare 1984 Mirror-Imaged 12-Inch Flagship Variant, Made in Canada, 100dB Efficiency, Freshly Refoamed With Correct Orange Surrounds, Excellent Condition
In over fifteen years of buying and selling used audio, this is the first pair of these we have seen.
That is not a figure of speech. The Concert Monitor 1000 turns up occasionally in its later, smaller form — but this is the 1984 first-generation cabinet with 12-inch woofers, and it is a genuinely uncommon thing to find, let alone find working properly and looking like this.
Sound Dynamics came out of Audio Products International, the Toronto company also responsible for Mirage and Energy. The house design was unmistakable: a large woofer, a spun aluminum horn-loaded tweeter, and efficiency figures most modern speakers cannot approach. The Concert Monitor name was not marketing. These were built to fill a room from a modest amplifier, and they do.
The efficiency is the headline, and it changes what you can drive them with. At 100dB, these are in territory almost nothing modern occupies — a horn-loaded tweeter and a 12-inch woofer presenting an easy 8-ohm load and converting a remarkable amount of what you feed them into actual sound. Speakers of this design have a long-standing following among tube amplifier owners for precisely that reason, and there is real headroom here from a handful of watts. If you have a low-powered amplifier you love and have never quite been able to let off the leash, these are the speakers for it. Run them from a vintage silver-face receiver and they will not feel remotely short-changed.
This is also a true mirror-imaged pair — the left and right cabinets are handed, built as a matched set rather than two identical boxes. That is not something most manufacturers bothered with at this price, then or now. Handing a pair keeps the baffle geometry symmetrical about the listening position, which is what allows a stereo image to lock in place instead of drifting toward whichever speaker happens to be closer. It only works if you keep them on their correct sides, and they are marked.
The rear decal confirms these were built in Canada in 1984, and this pair carries the full-colour rear decal and colour front badges of the early production run — the details that identify this specific version rather than the smaller, later cabinets that wore the same name.
Understand the scale before anything else. Each cabinet stands 34.8 inches tall, 14.2 inches wide and 12.6 inches deep, and weighs 60 lbs — roughly three and a half cubic feet apiece. These are large, deliberately so, and that internal volume is precisely where the effortless low end comes from. They need a room that can take them, and it is worth measuring your space before you fall for them.
The woofers have been freshly refoamed with the correct orange surrounds. That detail is worth dwelling on. Orange was the factory colour on these drivers, and the great majority of refoamed Sound Dynamics on the market come back wearing black foam because it is what is easiest to source. This pair looks the way it left the factory, which matters if you care about a speaker being right rather than merely working.
Both horn tweeters are original and performing correctly — the spun aluminum horns that give these their signature top end, exactly as they left the factory in 1984.
Condition
Cosmetically these are in excellent condition, and we don’t hand that rating out casually — particularly not to something built in 1984. The cabinets present beautifully, and they look genuinely striking with the grilles off.
They have been thoroughly inspected and tested to confirm full functionality.
Features: Rare 1984 first-generation variant with 12-inch woofers — the first pair we have seen in over fifteen years True mirror-imaged pair — handed left and right cabinets, built as a matched set 100dB sensitivity — ideal for lower-powered, vintage and tube amplifiers Two-way design with 12-inch woofer and spun aluminum horn-loaded tweeter Woofers freshly refoamed with correct orange factory-colour surrounds Original spun aluminum horn tweeters, both tested and performing correctly Full-colour rear decal and colour front badges of the early production run Substantial floorstanding cabinet, roughly 3.5 cubic feet per side
Built in Canada in 1984, unusually large, unusually efficient, and freshly brought back to correct specification.

Definitive Technology BP-10 4-Driver Bipolar Towers — USA-Built
Each tower is two complete two-way systems, one facing forward and one facing directly backward, both radiating in phase. That is the whole point: where a dipole panel's front and rear bass partially cancel and the speaker has to come several feet into the room, these reinforce each other and the tower is happiest eight to twelve inches off the wall. Four drivers a side, bass to 20 Hz, built in Baltimore. Graded Good, and the grade is the high-gloss end caps — three decades of black lacquer carries scuffs and a few small chips.
Tannoy Mercury F3 Slim Floorstanding Speakers — Apple Finish
A two-way floorstander built on a deliberately simple recipe: one 6.5 inch bass and midrange driver covering everything below a 1 inch textile dome, crossed at 2.7 kHz by a fourth-order Linkwitz-Riley — no midrange handover in the region the ear is most sensitive to, and drivers that sum flat and stay in phase through the crossing. 89 dB into a nominal 8 ohms, happy on anything from 10 to 100 watts, and eight inches wide. The light Apple finish hardly ever comes up. Very Good condition.
Totem Acoustic Sttaf Floorstanders — Maple, Made in Canada
Totem's slim, hand-built Montreal floorstander in the maple veneer the factory charged extra for — a single 5.5-inch driver and a textile dome in a narrow mono-shell cabinet that images far wider than its size and reaches 39 Hz. Happiest at civilised levels in a small to medium room. Fitted here with Radique Audio bi-wire bridges. Pair, ships from Kanata, ON.
Totem Claw Speaker Isolation Feet — Set of 6, Machined Aluminum
Totem's own decoupling feet — the same machined aluminium Claws the factory fits to the Forest and the Wind — as a complete set of six, enough for one pair of speakers at three per cabinet. They fix with the included self-tapping screws, so no threaded insert is needed, and work on hardwood, tile or concrete where spikes do not. Ball bearings included.
