Jadis Defy DP-60 Vacuum Tube Preamplifier — MM/MC Phono Stage, Twin Preamplifier Outputs, Hand-Built in France, with Original Factory Packaging

Jadis have been building valve electronics in the south of France since 1983, by hand, in small numbers, and they have never made anything else. The company’s reputation is for chassis work and transformers of a standard that has almost disappeared from audio, and for a sound that people either arrange their entire system around or never quite get out of their heads after hearing it once.

Line Stage and Phono Stage

The Defy DP-60 is the full-function preamplifier: line stage and phono stage together, valve throughout the signal path, with a moving-magnet and moving-coil phono section built in rather than bolted on. That matters more now than it did when this was made. A modern preamplifier with a phono stage this serious is a very expensive object, and most of what is available instead is a small solid-state board added to a line preamp as a checkbox.

The Two-Box Design

It is a two-box design, and that is the point rather than an inconvenience. The power supply lives in its own separate enclosure, so the mains transformer — the loudest electrical object in any preamplifier and the one sitting closest to the most delicate signal in the system — is physically removed from the audio circuitry rather than partitioned off inside the same case. On a phono stage working with fractions of a millivolt from a moving-coil cartridge, that separation is worth more than any amount of internal shielding. Both units are here — the preamplifier at 24.2 lbs and the power supply at 9 lbs.

Twin Preamplifier Outputs

It carries two sets of preamplifier outputs. That means you can run two power amplifiers from it — biamping a pair of speakers actively, driving a subwoofer from the preamp rather than off the speaker terminals, or feeding a second system in another room — without splitters or a distribution box in the signal path.

Warm-Up

Give it time to come up to temperature before you judge it, as you would any valve preamplifier worth owning.

Tested Here

The phono stage was checked on our bench and the moving-magnet section performed correctly.

Condition

Condition is excellent.

Original Factory Packaging

It comes with all of its original factory packaging, and Jadis did not do this by halves. The preamplifier has its inner carton and its outer carton, as it left the factory. The power supply has its own purpose-built heavy-duty box, fitted with extensive pre-cut shaped foam that holds the unit exactly. Second-hand this is genuinely uncommon — most equipment of this age parted company with its cartons decades ago — and it means this one can travel properly protected, whether it is going across the country or just to a different room in a few years’ time. It means this one can be shipped properly protected, and it means you can move house with it later without improvising.

Original List Price

Jadis introduced the DP-60 in 1989 at a list price of US$3,500. Converted and carried forward to today, that is several times what we are asking for it.

Who This Suits

Jadis preamplifiers do not come up often, and full-function ones with the phono stage intact come up less often still. Available for pickup in Kanata, or shipped across Canada and internationally — we have sent equipment to fifteen countries in the past year, each piece packed in-house in 275 lb test double-wall boxes. Live shipping rates for your address are calculated at checkout.
