Precision crafted in the USA during Marantz’s 1976–78 era, the Model 3800 belongs to a small group of premium Marantz components manufactured entirely domestically. It combines exceptionally low distortion, whisper-quiet operation, and a feature set — including built-in Dolby encoding and decoding — that was rare for any preamplifier of the period.
Why the 3800 Is Still Respected
The numbers hold up by any standard: total harmonic distortion of 0.25% across the full 5Hz–60kHz range, with signal-to-noise ratios reaching 100dB on line inputs and 82dB on the MM phono stage. The phono section tracks the RIAA curve with real accuracy, and the line stage is ruler-flat from subsonic to ultrasonic. These are figures that still stand comparison with modern solid-state designs costing considerably more.
Inputs, Loops and the Dolby Section
The phono stage takes moving magnet cartridges at 1mV sensitivity with 60dB of gain — ample for vintage and modern MM cartridges alike. Four line-level inputs (Phono 1, Phono 2/Mic, Tuner, Aux) plus dual tape loops cover complex vintage systems, and the tape loops support full deck-to-deck dubbing.
The built-in Dolby encoder and decoder includes calibration controls and metering for both record and playback, with a 400Hz tone generator for tape calibration. Dolby FM broadcast has been obsolete for decades, but the tape encoding and decoding remains fully functional for archival cassette work.
Tone Control That Means It
The front panel carries independent left and right bass, mid and treble sliders for precise tonal shaping, along with turnover frequency selectors (250Hz, 4kHz) and high and low-cut filters (30Hz, 5kHz, 9kHz) for optimising vintage recordings or taming unruly source material. A tone defeat switch bypasses all EQ for purist listening. The mode selector offers stereo, mono, left, right and reverse, and the balance control provides fine channel matching.
Dual preamp outputs enable bi-amping or driving multiple power amplifiers at once. The speaker switching system allows two pairs of speakers (Main and Remote) when used with a power amplifier fed back through the speaker input jacks — unusual, and genuinely useful in a multi-room setup. Four switched and two unswitched AC outlets round out system power management.
A Natural Power Amplifier Partner
Those switched outlets matter more than they look. Several Golden Age Marantz power amplifiers have no power switch of their own and are designed to be woken by a preamplifier’s switched outlet — our Marantz 170DC power amplifier is exactly that case, and the two make a coherent all-Marantz Golden Age system.
Condition & Service
This 3800 has undergone Level One service, with all critical functions verified operating reliably and cleanly. Cosmetically it presents in very good condition — clean faceplate, functional meters and displays, smooth-operating sliders and switches, and minimal wear consistent with careful ownership over nearly five decades. At 14.5 lb the substantial metal chassis reflects American manufacturing standards of the 1970s: robust construction, quality circuit boards, and straightforward serviceability with socketed ICs throughout.

Rotel RC-870 Preamplifier – MM/MC Phono, Made in Japan, 1985
Rotel called this a stereo control amplifier rather than a preamp, and it earns the name — no tone controls, no filters, no loudness, just four line inputs and two tape loops with dubbing either way. The phono stage runs moving magnet and moving coil through separate buffers, and line distortion is no greater than 0.004%. Stamped Tokyo, Japan on the rear panel. Excellent cosmetic condition.
