Marantz 3800 Audiophile Preamp – Made in USA
Precision crafted in the USA during Marantz’s legendary 1976-78 era, the Model 3800 represents the pinnacle of American-made preamplifier engineering. Part of an elite group of premium Marantz components manufactured entirely domestically, the 3800 combines exceptionally low distortion, whisper-quiet operation, and advanced features including built-in Dolby encoding/decoding—rare for any preamp of this period.
This 3800 has undergone Level One service, ensuring all critical functions operate reliably and cleanly. Cosmetically, this preamp presents in very good condition with clean faceplate, functional meters and displays, smooth-operating sliders and switches, and minimal wear consistent with careful ownership over nearly five decades.
The 3800’s sonic performance remains astonishing by any standard: total harmonic distortion of just 0.25% across the entire 5Hz to 60kHz frequency range, with signal-to-noise ratios reaching 100dB on line inputs and 82dB on the MM phono stage—numbers that rival modern solid-state designs costing thousands more. The phono section tracks the RIAA curve with exceptional accuracy, and the line stage delivers ruler-flat response from subsonic to ultrasonic frequencies.
The phono stage accommodates moving magnet cartridges with 1mV sensitivity and 60dB gain, providing ample amplification for vintage and modern MM cartridges alike. Four line-level inputs (Phono 1, Phono 2/Mic, Tuner, Aux) plus dual tape loops offer comprehensive connectivity for complex vintage systems. The tape loops support full dubbing between decks, and the built-in Dolby encoder/decoder enables noise-reduced tape recording and playback—a sophisticated feature that distinguished the 3800 from simpler preamps of its era.
The front panel features independent left and right bass, mid, and treble sliders offering precise tonal shaping, along with turnover frequency selectors (250Hz, 4kHz) and multiple high and low-cut filters (30Hz, 5kHz, 9kHz) for optimizing playback of vintage recordings or taming unruly source material. A tone defeat switch bypasses all EQ for purist listening. The mode selector enables stereo, mono, left, right, and reverse configurations, while the balance control provides fine channel matching.
The built-in Dolby system includes calibration controls and metering for both record and playback, enabling proper tape encoding and decoding when used with compatible cassette decks. The 400Hz tone generator facilitates tape calibration. While Dolby FM broadcast has been obsolete for decades, the Dolby tape encoding/decoding remains functional for archival cassette work.
Dual preamp outputs enable bi-amping or driving multiple power amplifiers simultaneously. The speaker switching system allows connection of two pairs of speakers (Main and Remote) when used with a power amplifier fed back through the speaker input jacks—an unusual but flexible feature for multi-room systems. Four switched and two unswitched AC outlets provide comprehensive system power management.
At 6.6 kg (14.5 lbs), the 3800’s substantial metal chassis reflects American manufacturing standards of the 1970s—robust construction, quality circuit boards, reliable components, and straightforward serviceability with socketed ICs throughout.
