Sony CDP-M35 — A Fourteen-Inch Japanese Sony CD Player for the System That Has No Room for a Full-Width One
A compact Japanese-built CD player from 1987, fourteen inches wide rather than the usual seventeen, with a headphone output on the front and a dual digital-to-analogue converter behind it.
The Midi Format
The midi format is the point of this one. Sony built the CDP-M35 to match the smaller component systems of the period, so it stands fourteen inches across and three inches tall and weighs under seven pounds — which makes it a straightforward answer for a shelf, a desk, or a second system where a full-width player simply will not fit. Finding a midi-sized player that was properly built rather than merely small is the hard part, and this is a Japanese-made Sony from the years when the company was still treating CD as its own invention.
Dual D/A Converter
Behind the drawer is a dual digital-to-analogue converter with a four-times oversampling digital filter — a genuine two-converter arrangement rather than one chip switching between channels, which is why the channel separation figure is as good as it is. The player is also CD-single compatible, so the eight-centimetre discs drop straight into the tray without an adapter.
Headphone Output
A headphone output sits on the front panel, so the player works on its own without an amplifier in the chain, and fixed line outputs on the back connect it to anything else.
Service History
This one has been through our Level 1 service, which covers thorough testing of every input, output and control, along with deep cleaning and deoxidation, and it is the level a machine needs when it arrives in sound working order rather than requiring intervention.
Remote and Disc Compatibility
The original remote is not included. Play, pause, stop and track selection are all on the front panel.
It is a 1987 machine and reads commercially pressed discs — CD-R and CD-RW discs came later and are outside what it was built to play.
Condition
Cosmetically this example is graded Good. There is general wear consistent with its age and some stacking marks on the cabinet, but no major flaws.
A few relevant specifications:
A properly made small player from the era when Sony still built these in Japan, for the system that has no room for a full-width one.

A five-disc carousel using Sony's Play 1/Exchange 4 mechanism — you can swap four discs while the fifth keeps playing. Hybrid Pulse D/A conversion, 0.0045% distortion, better than 102 dB signal-to-noise, and a Toslink optical output for an outboard DAC or receiver. Reads CD-R and CD-RW. A third-party universal remote comes with it, covering the key functions but not all of the original ones.
Yamaha CDC-902 5-Disc CD Changer – Original Remote, Plays CD-R
Near the top of Yamaha's Natural Sound carousel range, and the numbers say so — 106dB signal to noise, 96dB dynamic range, 0.003% distortion. The line output is variable from the remote, so it can drive a power amp directly in a simple system. It reads CD-Rs, which Yamaha never claimed for this generation; we verified that here. Original remote. Cosmetically graded Good.
NAD T572 5-Disc CD Changer – HDCD Decoder, Coax & Optical Out
Five discs at once with an HDCD decoder on board — High Definition Compatible Digital folds roughly twenty bits of range into an ordinary sixteen-bit CD, and most players never had the decoder to read it. The carousel reloads four while the fifth keeps playing, which the cheaper T571 could not do. Coaxial and optical digital out, original NAD remote. Very good condition.

Sony CDP-C260Z 5-Disc Carousel CD Changer w/ Optical Out
Five discs on a carousel, and Disc Ex-Change lets you swap four of the trays while the fifth keeps playing. This one has confirmed CD-R playback, which a good number of changers this age simply cannot manage. High Density Linear Converter D/A inside, and an optical digital output if you would rather use your own converter. Good cosmetic condition; Level 1 serviced here.
