JVC XL-F154 — A Five-Disc Carousel That Plays Home-Burned CD-Rs and Answers a JVC Remote Through COMPU LINK
A five-disc carousel changer that takes home-burned discs in its stride, with a headphone output on the front and JVC’s system control on the back.
The Carousel
The carousel is the sensible kind. Play and Exchange lets you swap any four discs while the fifth keeps playing, so an evening’s listening never has to stop for the machine. Five disc keys sit across the front panel, one per tray position, which means selecting a disc is a single press rather than a hunt through a menu. Programme play runs to thirty-two steps across all five discs, there are four repeat modes and a resume function, and Smart Random shuffles across the whole magazine rather than one disc at a time.
The Converter
Conversion is handled by JVC’s 1-bit P.E.M. D.D. converter with an eight-times oversampling digital filter — the same arrangement JVC used across this generation, and a good deal more capable than the price of a five-disc changer usually buys.
Plays CD-Rs
We have tested this one with CD-R discs and it plays them properly. That is worth saying plainly, because a great many changers of this era will not, and anyone with a shelf of home-burned compilations knows the disappointment of finding out the hard way.
COMPU LINK and the Headphone Output
Two things make it more useful than the specification list suggests. There is a headphone output on the front with its own volume control, so the changer works on its own late at night without waking the house. And there are two Enhanced COMPU LINK jacks on the back: connect it to a JVC amplifier or receiver with the same system and the two operate as one, with the changer answering the amplifier’s remote and synchronised recording available to a tape deck on the same chain.
Condition
Tested here and working properly. Cosmetically this example is graded Very Good — it presents well, with only the standard signs of use.
A few relevant specifications:
An honest five-disc changer that does the one thing many of its contemporaries cannot, and plays nicely with the rest of a JVC system.

Sony CDP-C260Z 5-Disc Carousel CD Changer w/ Optical Out
Five discs on a carousel, and Disc Ex-Change lets you swap four of the trays while the fifth keeps playing. This one has confirmed CD-R playback, which a good number of changers this age simply cannot manage. High Density Linear Converter D/A inside, and an optical digital output if you would rather use your own converter. Good cosmetic condition; Level 1 serviced here.

Sony CDP-CE375 5-Disc CD Changer — Optical Out | Play & Exchange
A five-disc carousel using Sony's Play 1/Exchange 4 mechanism — you can swap four discs while the fifth keeps playing. Hybrid Pulse D/A conversion, 0.0045% distortion, better than 102 dB signal-to-noise, and a Toslink optical output for an outboard DAC or receiver. Reads CD-R and CD-RW. A third-party universal remote comes with it, covering the key functions but not all of the original ones.
Yamaha CDC-902 5-Disc CD Changer – Original Remote, Plays CD-R
Near the top of Yamaha's Natural Sound carousel range, and the numbers say so — 106dB signal to noise, 96dB dynamic range, 0.003% distortion. The line output is variable from the remote, so it can drive a power amp directly in a simple system. It reads CD-Rs, which Yamaha never claimed for this generation; we verified that here. Original remote. Cosmetically graded Good.
NAD T572 5-Disc CD Changer – HDCD Decoder, Coax & Optical Out
Five discs at once with an HDCD decoder on board — High Definition Compatible Digital folds roughly twenty bits of range into an ordinary sixteen-bit CD, and most players never had the decoder to read it. The carousel reloads four while the fifth keeps playing, which the cheaper T571 could not do. Coaxial and optical digital out, original NAD remote. Very good condition.
