An early-nineties Pioneer CD player in black, made in Japan and built around Pioneer’s Stable Platter Mechanism, in very good condition, with a 1-bit DAC, an optical digital output and CD-R playback.
What it is
Most CD players clamp a disc at its center and spin it label-side up, with the edges free to flutter. In the Stable Platter Mechanism, Pioneer turned that upside down. The disc sits label-side down on a full-size turntable platter that supports it across its whole surface, and the laser reads it from above. The disc spins flat and steady, with far less vibration reaching the pickup, which is why these players are still sought out today, both on their own and as transports feeding an outboard DAC.
The PD-7700 was built from 1990 to 1992. Conversion is handled by Pioneer’s 1-bit DAC, rated at 108 dB signal-to-noise and 102 dB channel separation. The analog outputs feed any amplifier or receiver, and the optical digital output connects to an external DAC, a receiver or a recorder. It plays the CD-Rs you have burned as well as pressed discs, and there is a headphone jack with its own volume control.
It sold new in Germany in 1991 for DM 550, about $750 in 2026 Canadian dollars.
Condition
Very good, and free of significant marks, as the photographs show.
A Pioneer universal remote is included. It handles play, pause, skip, fast forward, rewind and direct track selection, and nothing more.
A Stable Platter Pioneer for the price of an ordinary CD player, and a fine transport for the DAC you already own.
