Avant 1AX Bookshelf Speakers, Pair – Canadian, Real Wood Veneer

A matched pair of Avant 1AX bookshelf speakers: Canadian-built, dressed in real wood veneer, with freshly refoamed woofers and sequential serial numbers.

What they are

Avant is often mistaken for Advent, or for a generic house brand. It was neither. Avant was a small, independent Canadian loudspeaker maker, sold through independent Canadian audio shops before the company quietly folded. It put its money where it counts: solid cabinets, real wood and well-chosen drivers.

The AX line ran from this compact 1AX up to the big 5AX floorstander, and the 1AX is where it starts. It is a two-way sealed (acoustic suspension) bookshelf speaker with an 8-inch woofer, in a solid particleboard cabinet finished in genuine wood veneer with a moulded wood front frame. Sealed designs like this are known for tight, articulate bass and for being forgiving about placement near a wall. These are lively and detailed, and they sound far better than a forgotten brand has any right to.

They are also a true pair: the badges carry sequential serial numbers, 890711 and 890712, so these two left the factory together.

The work we have done

We have refoamed both woofers with new surrounds, so the part that fails first on any speaker of this age is fresh.

Condition

Good. From the front they present very well: the drivers and new surrounds are clean, the baffles are tidy and both grilles are intact, each with its gold Avant badge and pull tab. The veneer is sound, with no lifting or peeling. The tops show light scuffs and some rubbed spots in the finish, the front frame edges show light wear at the corners, and the painted back panels show their age.

A forgotten Canadian name, built properly, refreshed and ready for another few decades of music.
