Yamaha began as an organ maker in Hamamatsu, Japan, in 1887. It made gramophones from the 1920s and began hi-fi with the 1954 HiFi Player. We carry Yamaha AV receivers, vintage stereo receivers, CD players, subwoofers and speakers. We’ve had more than 280 Yamaha listings so far, covering nearly 200 different models. Every used Yamaha here is inspected, tested and serviced as required, then photographed in-house and covered by our Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty and Perpetual Trade-Back Program. Every AV receiver we list is tested input by input on our bench: each HDMI input and output, the analog, optical and coaxial inputs, the subwoofer outputs and the wireless features where it has them. Don’t see the model you want? Tell us on First Dibs and we’ll email you when one arrives.

Yamaha models we’ve sold most often: the SW-3 subwoofer, the NX-E270 surrounds, and the RX-V1400, RX-V850 and RX-V800 AV receivers.

The Yamaha hi-fi story

Torakusu Yamaha built his first reed organ in Hamamatsu in 1887 and founded Nippon Gakki in 1897; the company was renamed Yamaha Corporation in 1987. Yamaha calls the 1954 HiFi Player its first audio product, and dates its first Natural Sound (NS) speakers to 1967.

1970s hi-fi. The CA-700 and CA-500 of 1972 were Yamaha’s first integrated amplifiers, and the CA-1000 of 1973 could switch its output stage between Class A and Class A/B. The NS-1000 and NS-1000M speakers of 1974 used beryllium dome drivers, and the NS-10M of 1978, sold for home use, became a studio monitor.

CD and surround. The CD-1 of 1982 was Yamaha’s first CD player. The DSP-1 of 1986 was a Digital Sound Field Processor, and in 1993 the RX-V870 became the first Yamaha receiver with CINEMA DSP. The RX-V992 of 1997 added built-in Dolby Digital decoding.

AVENTAGE. The AVENTAGE (RX-A) receiver line launched in 2010, above the RX-V range.

Which Yamaha is which?

CA integrated amplifiers (1972 to about 1979): the CA-500, CA-700, CA-1000 and CA-2000, followed by the A-series.

CR receivers (mid-1970s to about 1980): the CR-1000, then the CR-620 to CR-2020 generation of 1977 to 1979.

NS speakers: from the NS-690 and the beryllium NS-1000 to the NS-10M bookshelf speaker, made from 1978 to 2001.

CD players: from the CD-1 of 1982 to the CDX and GT-CD models.

RX-V AV receivers (from at least 1991): such as the RX-V800, RX-V850 and RX-V1400 we sell often. Built-in Dolby Digital arrived in 1997, YPAO room calibration in 2003 and HDMI in the mid-2000s.

RX-A AVENTAGE (from 2010): the step-up AV receivers. The RX-Z models were the flagships until 2007.

Buying used Yamaha: what to check

Formats. On an AV receiver, check what it decodes and connects to: Dolby Digital from 1997, room calibration from 2003, HDMI from the mid-2000s.

HDMI boards. On modern AV receivers, HDMI is usually the first thing to fail. We test every HDMI input and output before listing.

CR receivers. Owners suggest asking whether service bulletins were done on a CR-2020, and expect scratchy controls and burnt-out dial lamps on any unserviced unit.

NS speakers. Check that the tweeters on an NS-10M are original and both work, and inspect the beryllium domes on an NS-1000, since Yamaha stopped making beryllium diaphragms in 1997.

Everything we list is inspected, tested and serviced as required here, and comes with our warranty.

Yamaha Q2031 Dual 31-Band Graphic Equalizer – Made in Japan, 2U

$295.00

Thirty-one bands per channel on ISO third-octave centres, 20Hz to 20kHz, on two fully independent channels — fine enough to pull a single room mode down without touching what sits either side of it. A range switch halves boost and cut to ±6dB for careful work, and the high-pass filters sweep from 20 to 200Hz. Balanced XLR and 1/4-inch throughout, 2U rack. Condition good.

Yamaha SW-3 Active Servo Subwoofer — 10″ Woofer | Air Woofer Tec

$225.00

Yamaha’s Active Servo Technology couples a negative-impedance drive amplifier to a Helmholtz resonator port — the Air Woofer opening — so the amplifier corrects the driver’s motion as it works. 100 watts into a 25 cm cone, rated down to 25 Hz, with a continuously variable 50–150 Hz high-cut at 24 dB per octave. Speaker-level and line inputs both. Very good condition.

Yamaha RX-V795A 5.1 AV Receiver – 425W Peak, Phono

$195.00

Eighty-five watts into 8 ohms on each of five channels at 0.04% distortion, with Dolby Digital, DTS and Yamaha’s Cinema DSP modes. An MM phono input, three optical and one coaxial digital input, and a full set of 5.1 pre-outs if you later want outboard amplification. Ships with a new compatible remote, not the original. Level 1 serviced; very good condition.

Yamaha RX-V557 6.1-Channel Receiver – 540 Watt; Pure Direct Mode

$195.00

Ninety watts into 8 ohms on each of six channels at 0.06% distortion, with Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES Discrete 6.1. Pure Direct bypasses the tone controls and video circuitry for two-channel listening, and there are 192kHz/24-bit DACs on every channel. Remote included. Very good cosmetic condition, all channels stress-tested.

Yamaha NS-IW470 3-Way 6.5″ In-Wall Speakers — Pair, Black

$175.00

The midrange and tweeter both swivel, so you can aim them at the seat rather than at the opposite wall — useful in a room that is not symmetrical. A 6.5-inch coated paper woofer, a 2-inch paper midrange with its own level control, and a 1-inch silk dome. 55 Hz to 28 kHz, 6 ohms, wired internally with Monster Cable. Light traces of a previous installation, no damage.

Yamaha RX-V561 5.1 AVR 500W — 2x HDMI, 3 Digital In, Remote

$145.00

100 watts minimum RMS on every one of the five channels into 8 ohms, and dynamic power that climbs to 110, 130, 160 and 180 watts into 8, 6, 4 and 2 ohms — a receiver that keeps increasing output as the load gets harder has a supply with something in reserve. Where it earns its keep is bass management: a crossover selectable across nine points from 40 Hz to 200 Hz with a 12 dB per octave high-pass on front, centre and surround. Two HDMI inputs, three digital, remote included. Very good condition.

Yamaha YST-SW105 Active Servo Subwoofer — Compact 100W

$145.00

An 8-inch front-firing paper cone on Yamaha's Advanced Active Servo amplifier — 100 watts into 5 ohms, down to 30 Hz, from a cabinet small enough to tuck beside a bookshelf pair. Continuously variable high-cut from 50 to 150 Hz, a Music/Movie voicing switch, RCA and speaker-level inputs plus full-range pass-through outputs. Very good condition.

Yamaha R-V703 5.1 AVR 280 Watts — Cinema DSP, Phono

$145.00

Eighty watts to each of the front and centre channels, twenty to the rears, at 0.09% distortion. Yamaha's Digital Sound Field Processor carries six programs — Concert Hall, Rock Concert, Disco, Stadium, Movie and Concert Video — each built from measurements taken in real venues. Dolby Pro Logic, a moving-magnet phono input, a 40-station tuner. Good cosmetic condition; universal remote included.

Yamaha RX-V493 5.1 AVR, 240 Watts, 70 WPC, Phono

$145.00

Seventy watts a channel into 8 ohms across left, centre and right, 20 watts to the surrounds, and 0.04% distortion at 1 kHz. The reason to want one is the phono stage: moving magnet at 2.5mV with 80dB signal to noise, on a receiver at this price. Cinema DSP adds Cinema, Stadium and Concert Hall fields. A pre-programmed universal remote is included; all five channels tested.

Good Quality, Powerful Yamaha 630 Watt 6.1 AVR HTR-5750

$145.00

A silver-faced Yamaha 6.1 receiver rated at 630 watts total, with four digital inputs — three optical and one coaxial — a 5.1 analog input, and eight pairs of banana-ready speaker outputs. Impedance switching, S-video upconversion across 60 MHz of video bandwidth, lip-sync delay to 160 ms, and 29 surround programs. Universal remote and PDF manual included.
