Yamaha R-V703 5.1 AVR 280 Watts — Cinema DSP, Phono
The Yamaha R-V703 is a late-1990s Natural Sound AV receiver that combines Yamaha’s legendary Cinema DSP sound field processing with a genuine Dolby Pro Logic Surround decoder and a built-in phono stage — a versatile all-in-one solution for both music and movies that remains surprisingly capable and enjoyable today.
At its heart, the R-V703 delivers 80 watts per channel into 8 ohms across the front and centre channels, with 20 watts per channel to the rear surrounds — more than enough to fill a medium-sized room with clean, controlled sound. Yamaha’s Digital Sound Field Processor is the standout feature here, offering a selection of carefully crafted acoustic environments — Concert Hall, Rock Concert, Disco, Stadium, Movie, and Concert Video — each modelled from real-world venue measurements captured by Yamaha engineers. Combined with the built-in Dolby Pro Logic Surround decoder, the Cinema DSP Enhanced mode recreates a convincing movie-theatre experience from any Dolby Surround-encoded source.
For music listeners, the R-V703 offers a dedicated moving magnet phono input for turntable connection, a 40-station random-access preset tuner with automatic and manual tuning modes, and dual speaker pair outputs (A/B switching) for running two sets of main speakers. Bass and treble tone controls, a balance knob, and a full-sized headphone jack round out the front panel. Around back, inputs for CD, phono, tape/MD, and two video sources (DVD/LD and TV/DBS with composite video switching) cover all the analogue-era bases, plus a 6-channel discrete input allows connection of an external Dolby Digital (AC-3) decoder for upgraded surround capability. A switched AC outlet provides convenient power control for connected components.
This unit is in good cosmetic condition and comes with a pre-programmed universal remote control, tested and confirmed to operate all primary functions. Tested and inspected by our team at Radique Audio.
