Luxman R-117 Stereo Receiver — 160 Watts Per Channel, Dual-Rail Power Supply, MM and MC Phono, Pre-Out and Main-In

The most powerful receiver Luxman ever built, rated at 160 watts per channel, in very good condition.

The Last of the Big Receivers

By the late 1980s almost every manufacturer had abandoned the high-powered two-channel receiver in favour of surround processors. Luxman went the other way and built the R-117, which sat at the top of their receiver line and was marketed as the Ultimate Power Receiver. There is no bigger Luxman receiver. Ours are the R-3030 at 30 watts and the R-115 at 70; this one is 160.

The Power Section

The power section is the reason the thing exists. Luxman specified a dual-rail power supply fed by a massive triple-shielded transformer, fast-recovery rectifier diodes, and matched high-current bipolar output pairs — the sort of parts list that normally appears in a separate power amplifier, not in a receiver with a tuner bolted to it. Total harmonic distortion is quoted at 0.03 percent across the full 20 Hz to 20 kHz band, and signal-to-noise measures 100 dB on line inputs.

MM and MC Phono

The phono stage handles moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. That is genuinely unusual — most receivers of any era give you moving magnet and stop there, and a moving coil cartridge otherwise means buying a separate step-up stage. Sensitivity is 2.5 mV for MM and 0.22 mV for MC, with signal-to-noise of 88 dB and 70 dB respectively.

The Tuner

The tuner is a serious piece of engineering in its own right: a five-gang varactor, dual-gate MOSFET FM front end with automatic hi-blend circuitry, computer-assisted tuning, and twenty AM and FM presets you can assign in any order.

CD Straight

There is also a CD Straight path that routes a CD signal directly to the power amplifier stage, past the tone controls and the switching network, leaving only the volume control in the way. Alongside that you get conventional tone controls with a defeat switch, a three-position loudness contour, and a subsonic filter.

Pre-Out and Main-In

The back panel is more flexible than most receivers of this size. There are two sets of pre-amplifier outputs and a main-in jack, which means the preamplifier and the power amplifier sections can be split and used independently — run the R-117’s preamp into a bigger power amplifier, or feed an outboard processor’s output straight into its power stage. There is a processor loop, inputs for phono, CD and two tape decks with dubbing between them, three video sources with composite video switching, and connections for two pairs of speakers plus headphones.

Speaker Matching

Speaker load impedance is specified at 8 to 16 ohms. This is an amplifier for ordinary 8-ohm speakers, and it has a great deal of headroom driving them.

Condition

Condition is very good.
