This was the top of Harman Kardon’s receiver line, and it is built like it. Seven channels of high-current, ultrawide-bandwidth amplification rated at 80 watts each, fed by a supply capable of ±35 amps of instantaneous current — the specification that tells you how a receiver behaves when a soundtrack suddenly demands everything at once. At 31.5 lbs it has the weight to back that up.

Dolby Volume

The feature that sets this model apart is Dolby Volume. Harman Kardon was the first manufacturer to put it in a receiver, and the AVR 3600 is one of the models that carried it. You set the listening level you like, once. From then on the receiver holds that level no matter what you switch to — a quiet drama, a loud advert, a streaming box that runs hot, a CD that was mastered ten decibels above everything else. It also improves surround performance at low volume, which is exactly when most systems fall apart and start sounding thin.

Logic 7

Logic 7 is Harman Kardon’s own surround processing, and it is the reason people stay with the brand. It takes two-channel and 5.1 material and spreads it convincingly across all seven channels rather than simply copying signal to the back speakers.

High-Resolution Decoding

For high-resolution material there is full Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, with 192kHz/24-bit conversion, so Blu-ray soundtracks arrive intact rather than downmixed.

HDMI and Video

On the video side, four HDMI 1.4a inputs handle 3D and Deep Color, and Faroudja DCDi Cinema processing upscales standard-definition and analogue sources to 1080p. The on-screen menu system is a full high-definition interface rather than the blue text overlay most receivers of this class shipped with.

Connections

Connectivity is deep. Seven digital audio inputs — four optical and three coaxial — plus component and composite video, front-panel A/V for a quick guest connection, preamp outputs for adding external amplification later, an AM/FM tuner, and heavy-duty binding posts.

Two Zones

It is also a genuine two-zone receiver. Run a 5.1 system in the main room and assign the remaining two channels to a second pair of speakers elsewhere in the house — a deck, a kitchen, a workshop — with independent source selection, so what plays in one room has nothing to do with what plays in the other.

Room Calibration

EzSet/EQ handles room calibration and speaker setup from the on-screen menus, so getting it dialled in does not require an afternoon and a tape measure.
