Carver HR-772 Sonic Holography Receiver – 140 WPC, Rack Ears

A Carver HR-772 stereo receiver, rated at 140 watts per channel and fitted with rack ears and front handles, so it mounts in a standard 19-inch rack or sits on a shelf. It has been tested on our bench and is in very good condition.

What it is

The HR-772 was Carver’s flagship receiver of the early 1990s: 140 watts per channel into 8 ohms, 20 Hz to 20 kHz, at 0.05% distortion, and rated to drive loads down to 2 ohms, so demanding, low-impedance speakers hold no fears for it. It carries the two features Bob Carver’s company built its name on. Sonic Holography, Carver’s patented imaging circuit, is designed to throw the stereo image wider and deeper than the speakers themselves when they are set up symmetrically around your listening seat; one button turns it on or off. And the tuner uses Carver’s Asymmetrical Charge-Coupled FM Detector, which the company developed to pull clean stereo out of weak or crowded stations.

Around that, it is a full-featured receiver. There is a moving-magnet phono stage for your turntable, with a ground post, line inputs for CD, aux and two tape decks, with front-panel dubbing from tape 1 to tape 2, and two video inputs with composite video switching and a monitor output. Pre-out and main-in connections, linked by jumpers on the back, let the preamp and power amp sections be used separately. In place of plain bass and treble, Carver fitted a five-band equalizer at 63 Hz, 250 Hz, 1 kHz, 4 kHz and 16 kHz; a Source Direct switch takes it out of the signal path, and a loudness button fills out the bass at low volume. The tuner holds 20 station presets, and switched and unswitched AC outlets on the back can power the rest of your system.

Two pairs of speakers, A and B, are switched separately on the front panel, so you can run a second pair in another room or bi-wire one pair. The speaker terminals are binding posts that take bare wire or banana plugs; our own Radique Audio banana plugs are a neat fit, and our Custom Speaker Cable Builder will make a set to length, bi-wire pairs included.

Tested on our bench before listing: every input, output and control, Sonic Holography, and the AM/FM tuner.

Condition

Very Good, and free of significant marks. The black faceplate and knobs present well, and the display lights clearly.
