Philips 22GA427 Belt‑Drive Turntable – Made in Holland, Real Wood Plinth, Fully Serviced
The Philips 22GA427 is a rare and handsome early‑to‑mid‑1970s belt‑drive turntable made in Holland, featuring a real wood plinth and clean silver top plate that give it a warm, furniture‑grade presence. It combines classic Philips engineering with semi‑automatic convenience, making it an inviting choice for listeners who appreciate both style and sound quality.
This design uses a belt‑drive motor and a lightly suspended chassis to help isolate the platter and tonearm from external vibration. Two‑speed control (33 and 45 RPM) provides stable rotation with wow and flutter in roughly the 0.1% region and rumble around the low ‑60 dB area, in line with the closely related GA‑407 family. The simple front‑panel rocker controls make operation intuitive. The deck is semi‑automatic: at the end of the record the arm returns and the motor switches off, and as with this Philips series it should be turned off using either the auto‑return cycle or the stop switch for proper operation.
The straight, low‑mass tonearm is well‑suited to modern moving‑magnet cartridges and offers adjustable tracking force (approximately 0–4 g range) and anti‑skate for correct setup. This example is fitted with an Ortofon OM 5E cartridge and stylus, a musically engaging match known for its clear, balanced sound. The turntable has had a full service including new belt, lubrication of moving parts, tonearm realignment and calibration, and careful dust cover restoration. The original tired signal leads have been replaced with extra‑long, high‑quality 5‑foot RCA cables and a fresh 5‑foot ground lead terminated with a spade, giving you generous placement flexibility and hum‑free performance. It has been thoroughly tested and described as a nimble, great‑sounding deck. It will be offered with the platter transport‑locking screws in place so the mechanism can be secured for moving or any future transport by its next owner.
