Description

Sony TC-FX6C Cassette Deck | Dolby B&C | Made in Japan

This is a well-crafted, Made-in-Japan stereo cassette deck from Sony’s early 1980s FX series, distinguishing itself from the standard TC-FX6 with the addition of Dolby C noise reduction for noticeably quieter, more detailed tape playback.

The TC-FX6C was released around 1981 and represents Sony’s commitment to building capable, feature-rich cassette decks for the serious music listener. The inclusion of both Dolby B and Dolby C noise reduction — using Sony’s exclusive Dolby IC implementation — gives users flexibility across a wide range of pre-recorded and blank tapes. Dolby C, with its sliding-band design and anti-saturation circuit, delivers up to 20 dB of noise reduction, a meaningful step up from Dolby B alone.

The transport is driven by Sony’s BSL Green Motor for the capstan and a high-torque motor for the reels, contributing to the deck’s excellent wow and flutter figures. The feather-touch transport controls give it a refined, responsive feel. The four-digit Digital Linear Counter tracks playing time accurately even during fast-forward and rewind — a genuinely useful feature. The Automatic Music Sensor (AMS) can locate and cue up to nine tracks, and the memory stop and auto-play functions make unattended recording and playback straightforward. The deck accepts all four tape formulations of its era: ferric, chrome, FeCr, and metal.

This unit has undergone our Level One service and testing which should ensure many more years of reliable performance ahead.
