What it is
These are some of the coolest speakers we have had through our doors in a long while, and they are insanely impressive. A SoundSphere does not point at you. Each one is a sphere hung beneath a wide reflector dish: a 12-inch driver fires into the reflector, and four 3½-inch piezoelectric tweeters set around the sphere spread the highs, so the sound fans out through a full 360 degrees and down across the room below. SoundSphere calls it hemispherical dispersion, and the point of it is that the lows, mids and highs reach every corner of the room evenly. There is no sweet spot to sit in, and the sound stays balanced as you walk around.
SoundSphere, a division of Sonic Systems in Connecticut, has been building omnidirectional speakers since 1976, and its spheres were made to hang over gyms, rinks, restaurants and stores, where sound has to cover a big space evenly. The company says speakers from its earliest days are still in service around the world. The same idea makes these a showpiece at home: hung over a living room, a basement bar or a studio, they look like nothing else, with pure space-age style, and they sound like they own the room.
Each sphere is built from structural fiberglass with a gloss finish, and SoundSphere paired sensitive drivers with a high-efficiency enclosure: at 96 dB, these play loudly without needing a huge amount of power. The 12-inch heavy-duty woofer in these vintage units was often sourced from Electro-Voice. Each sphere is rated for 200 watts RMS into 8 ohms. This is the vintage version of the 2212-1, with a side-mounted 1/4-inch phone-jack input on each sphere, and the spheres connect to any standard amplifier or receiver. We sell the adapters (dual banana plug to 1/4-inch) for an additional $60 for the two speakers. Each sphere hangs beneath its reflector on three metal struts, and the matching steel hanging cables, with their shackles, are included; they attach at three points on the back of the reflector, the side that faces the ceiling. When the spheres are set down instead, as in our photographs, Radique Audio High Density Felt pads in our signature Magenta on the back of each reflector protect your floor.
The service it has had
Cleaned up and thoroughly tested on our bench before listing.
Condition
Good, with wear from use. These spheres served in a commercial space before they came to us, and we have cleaned them up. The white gloss spheres present well. The backs of the reflectors, the side that faces the ceiling when they hang, show scuffs and marks from use, and one of the spheres carries a “22” number decal on its front. The two are virtually identical, down to their matching steel cables, which are included.

Single Paradigm 4-Driver, 2-Way Dipole Speaker ADP-170 v4
One speaker, not a pair. Four drivers on two angled baffles — two 19 mm CMC domes and two 140 mm MPC cones on die-cast chassis — running out of phase above the 2 kHz crossover and in phase below it. That is what Paradigm meant by adapted dipole: a diffuse surround field without giving up the bass. The upper piece of vinyl cladding has been removed, so the top wants painting or a spot out of sight.
PSB Image 10S Bipole Surround Speakers — Black | Canada
Two driver modules per cabinet — a 25mm aluminium dome tweeter and a 133mm polypropylene woofer in each — angled rather than run out of phase, which widens the listening window without the comb filtering a true dipole introduces. Crossover at 2,500 Hz, 91 dB sensitivity into 6 ohms, 65 Hz to 23 kHz. Made in Canada, and a set of flush wall mounts comes with them.
Polk Audio f/x 500i Bipole/Dipole Surrounds — Made in USA, Pair
A genuine mirror-imaged pair, labelled LC and RC, with two driver arrays set 45 degrees apart and a rear-panel switch that flips them between bipole and dipole — locatable effects on the wall behind you, a diffuse field on the side walls, same speakers either way. 19.4 lbs each, half again the weight of the FXi A6 that replaced them, and 2 dB more sensitive. Built in the United States, with keyhole mounts moulded into the cabinet. Very Good condition.
