LXI AM4002 Integrated Amplifier 80 WPC (est), Dual Phono
A Korean-made LXI Series AM4002 integrated stereo amplifier, finished in black with solid metal silver knobs and switches — a surprisingly serious, feature-rich integrated with dual phono inputs, substantial weight for its form factor, and a very robust power supply, in good overall cosmetic condition.
LXI-branded components were sold through Sears in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but the AM4002 feels every bit as substantial as the better-known Japanese integrated amplifiers of the era. The front panel layout centres around a large power level display, flanked by a full compliment of controls: separate bass and treble, subsonic and high filters, loudness, muting, stereo/mono switching, tape monitor and dubbing, and even a front-panel mic mixing input. The knobs are metal, cold to the touch and reassuringly solid in feel, very much in the spirit of contemporary Marantz and Pioneer designs. Speaker outputs for A and B pairs, a dedicated headphone jack, and a selector offering PHONO 1, PHONO 2, TUNER, and AUX make this a genuinely versatile hub for a vintage two-channel system.
The rear panel confirms dual phono inputs (PHONO 1 and PHONO 2), along with TUNER and AUX, two tape loops, A/B speaker outputs, and switched/unswitched AC convenience outlets. The amplifier is rated for 120 V 60 Hz operation with a 450 VA power consumption figure, which, combined with its 22.9 lb weight, strongly suggests a serious power transformer and real current delivery capability. In listening, the AM4002 behaves like a genuinely powerful amplifier, driving demanding speakers with ease and maintaining composure at higher levels.
Despite careful research, we have not been able to locate an original factory manual or authoritative published specifications for the AM4002. One anecdotal reference claims a rating of approximately 100 watts per channel, and based on the 450 VA power consumption rating, the amplifier’s substantial heft, and our own listening tests, that figure is entirely plausible — but in the absence of original documentation, it remains an informed estimate rather than a verified specification. For that reason we describe the amplifier more conservatively as approximately 80 WPC (est) in the title, while noting the 100 WPC anecdote here. What can be said with confidence is that this model appears to be extremely scarce on today’s market, a rarity that will appeal to collectors looking for something off the beaten path with real substance behind it.
Cosmetically, this unit is in good condition overall. The case and faceplate show honest wear consistent with age and use, but the black faceplate still presents well, the contrasting silver metal knobs and switches are intact and operate smoothly, and the casework remains solid and presentable on the rack.
This unit has undergone our Level One service and testing which should ensure many more years of reliable performance ahead.
