Marantz Model 1200 Integrated Amplifier – 100 WPC, Made in USA

Marantz’s flagship integrated of the early seventies, built in Sun Valley, California, through our Level 2 service and playing as it should.

What it is

The Model 1200 is what Marantz built when it put its separates into one chassis: the control section of the Model 3300 preamplifier and the power section of the Model 240 amplifier, together on one brushed-aluminum faceplate. It was made in the company’s own Sun Valley plant — the rear panel reads “Precision Crafted in U.S.A.” — in the years before production moved to Japan, which is a large part of why the 1200 is sought after in a way most integrated amplifiers of the period are not.

It is rated at a genuine 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms, both channels driven across the full 20 Hz to 20 kHz band, and 125 per channel into 4 ohms. That was a serious number in 1972 and it still is: this will drive almost any speaker you are likely to own with headroom to spare, and it does so with the warm, unforced balance that made the Marantz name.

The controls are the classic Marantz console layout: slider tone controls for bass and treble on each channel, switchable high and low filters, loudness, tone-control defeat, a tape monitor, and a mode control with stereo, reverse, mono and A+B. Inputs cover two phono decks, a tuner, two auxiliary sources and a tape loop, with a microphone input as well. There are two sets of speaker outputs, selectable from the front, a center-channel output, and pre-out / main-in connections on the rear for expanding the system with an external processor or a second amplifier.

The service it has had

This one has been through our Level 2 service, which is to say it needed a substantial round of component replacement on the amplifier boards before it could be sold as a working unit. The Model 1200 is known for running hot, and after fifty years the parts nearest the heat are the ones that drift. Here the electrolytic capacitors in the driver and voltage-reference stages were replaced, the output stage was repaired, and the DC offset and bias on both channels were reset and held to specification under load. The bag of parts that came off it is the measure of the job.

Alongside that, the standard bench work:

• Cleaned inside and out
• Faceplate and knobs detailed
• Pots and switches cleaned and deoxidized
• Rear panel and RCA jacks cleaned
• Resistors, transistors and capacitors checked, and replaced where necessary
• Bias and DC offset checked and adjusted
• Lamps checked and replaced as required
• Thorough post-service testing, both phono inputs and both speaker systems confirmed

Condition

Very Good. The brushed faceplate and knobs present well, the black chassis and heat sinks are clean, and the unit carries the light marks a fifty-year-old amplifier earns. It is offered in its stock black metal case; its walnut case is listed separately, and our woodworker is building an Ottawa Valley cherry cabinet for this model — ask if you would like it dressed in cherry.
