A pair of Fisher XP-65S three-way sealed speakers, freshly refoamed, in walnut.
What they are
Fisher Radio of Long Island City built the XP series through the late sixties and into the seventies, and the XP-65S sits in the middle of it: a genuine three-way in a sealed cabinet, with a ten-inch woofer doing nothing but bass, a 4.7-inch cone on midrange and a 2.75-inch cone above that.
Giving the woofer one job is the whole argument for a three-way. The midrange never has to come out of a driver that is simultaneously trying to move air at 40 Hz, and the result is a speaker that stays composed when a mix gets busy in a way two-ways of the period often did not.
The cabinet is sealed rather than ported. That trade is deliberate and it is the same one Advent and Acoustic Research built their reputations on: you give up a little efficiency and a little of the lowest octave, and in exchange the bass starts and stops with the music instead of trailing behind it. Fisher rated the system 33 Hz to 20 kHz, which is honest reach for a box this size.
Maximum input is 30 watts music power, so these are not a speaker for a large room at volume. Give them a modest amplifier and a normal living room and they are entirely happy.
The grilles
Worth their own paragraph. The XP-65S wears a deeply textured woven cloth with a sculpted geometric relief across it, and the small Fisher badge set into the upper corner. It is unmistakably of its moment and it is not a subtle look. People tend to decide about these grilles within about a second, and most decide in their favour.
The work that has been done
The woofers have been freshly refoamed in our own shop. The perished surrounds were removed entirely and replaced rather than patched over.
This is the single repair that separates a working pair of vintage speakers from a pair of ornaments, and on a speaker of this age it is not optional — every example eventually needs it, and a pair still wearing its factory surrounds is a pair with a bill attached. It has been done properly here. Everything else has been thoroughly inspected and tested to confirm full functionality.
Condition
The cabinets present very well in walnut, with the warm tone a finish of this era takes on over fifty years. Connection is by the original COM and 8-ohm spring terminals on the rear plate.
A straightforward pair of vintage three-ways, refoamed where it counts, that will reward a modest amplifier and a real room.

🔌 Speaker Cable and the Right Connector
The speaker terminals here are spring clips rather than binding posts, so banana plugs and spades will not fit — our own gold-plated pin connectors are the right answer, and they make connecting and disconnecting far easier than stripping bare wire every time. We also hand-build speaker cable here in any length you need, terminated to suit, on our Custom Speaker Cable Builder. 👉

JBL 62T Bookshelf Speakers – Rosewood Finish, Titanium Dome
Discounted for the aftermarket screw holes a previous owner left in the back panels, and very good everywhere else — original drivers, clean rosewood finish, both tested here. A mid-1980s two-way with a pure titanium tweeter that runs out to 23 kHz, and an easy 89 dB load that a thirty-watt vintage receiver drives properly.
Mission 731 Bookshelf — Made in England, Inverted Driver Design
Two things to tell you: a ding on the top side edge of one cabinet, and third-party binding posts a previous owner fitted to one speaker. Otherwise good — and the design is the interesting part, since Mission's inverted geometry puts the tweeter below the woofer to bring the two into step at seated ear height. Made in England.
Bowers & Wilkins WM2 Outdoor Speakers, Pearl White, w/ Brackets
On an outdoor speaker the condition is the whole story — these are almost never retired for how they sound, but for sun turning a white cabinet chalky and yellow, freeze-thaw working at the seams, and grilles blooming with rust. Pearl White shows all of it more plainly than black would, and this pair grades Very Good, factory wall brackets included. B&W did not design a weatherproof box and then find a driver to fit it either: a 130 mm woven fibreglass cone crossed at 3.5 kHz to a 25 mm dome, the same material philosophy as their indoor speakers.
Castle Knight 1 Bookshelf Speakers — Real Wood Cherry, Pair
From a Yorkshire company that spent forty years being known for its cabinets above all else. The cherry veneer is deep-figured real timber, book-matched across the two cabinets so the grain mirrors when they are set up together, then sealed and waxed by hand over more than five days. Underneath is an honest two-way bass-reflex with a 130 mm woven natural-fibre bass/mid driver and five-way binding posts. Very Good condition.
PSB Alpha A/V Shielded Bookshelf Speakers — 6.5″ Woofer, Canada
The final 6.5-inch version of the speaker that made PSB's name — the 1998 Alpha A/V, with the upgraded tweeter, crossover and banana-plug terminals, and magnetic shielding so it can sit right beside a screen. Ninety decibels sensitive, so a modest receiver drives them well. Black ash, graded Very Good, bench-tested here. Pair.
