Description

A pair of Focal Chorus 714V floorstanding loudspeakers in Light Walnut, made in France.

What they are

The 714V is the smallest floorstander in Focal’s Chorus 700 V range, and it solves a problem a great many listeners actually have: wanting the scale and the bass of a tower without surrendering the room to one.

At just under eight inches wide these take almost no floor. The 2.5-way arrangement — two 5.5-inch Polyglass drivers, the upper one also carrying midrange — reaches down to 43 Hz and gives the midrange real body. Slim does not have to mean thin.

The tweeter

This is the reason people seek Focal out. The one-inch TNV inverted dome, in aluminum-magnesium alloy, is made by Focal in France and runs flat to 28 kHz.

In practice it gives the top end an open, unhurried quality — cymbals that shimmer rather than hiss, string tone that stays sweet at volume. The Polyglass cones pair with it well: cellulose pulp treated with glass microspheres, combining paper’s natural damping with the rigidity of glass.

Placement and amplification

At 91 dB sensitivity these are an easy load and do not need an expensive amplifier. Focal recommend 30 to 150 watts. The port fires forward, which means they tolerate sitting closer to a wall than most reflex towers will, and Focal suggest rooms of 160 to 215 square feet — sound advice.

The finish

Light Walnut is the pale, warm catalogue finish for this series, and it is the one that looks least like every other black tower in the room. The cabinet beneath it is solid MDF with non-parallel internal walls.

Condition

This pair is in very good cosmetic condition and has been thoroughly inspected and tested to confirm full functionality.

Genuine French engineering in a finish and a footprint that suit a real living room.

🔌 Speaker Cable, Built on Our Own Bench

The speaker terminals here are five-way binding posts, so they take banana plugs or spade lugs and you have the run of the options. We hand-build speaker cable here in any length you need — choose the gauge and the terminations on our Custom Speaker Cable Builder. If you would rather terminate cable you already own, we make our own gold-plated banana plugs and spade connectors as well. 👉

🦶 IsoAcoustics GAIA III — the Right Rating for These Towers

At 35.6 lb each, the Chorus 714V sits well inside the rating of IsoAcoustics GAIA III isolators — 70 lb per set of four — which decouple each cabinet from the floor. Ask us to confirm the thread fit to these cabinets before you order. On carpet, add GAIA Carpet Discs. We are an authorized IsoAcoustics dealer. 👉

Focal was founded in Saint-Étienne, France, in 1979 by Jacques Mahul, and began as a maker of drive units. Its home speakers were sold under the JMlab name until the mid-2000s. We carry Focal towers, bookshelf speakers, Sib satellites, centre channels and subwoofers. We've had nearly 60 Focal listings so far. Every used Focal here is inspected, tested and serviced as required, then photographed in-house and covered by our Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty and Perpetual Trade-Back Program. Don't see the model you want? Tell us on First Dibs and we'll email you when one arrives.

Our best-selling Focal models so far: the Sib and Sib XL satellites, followed by the Chorus 705 S bookshelf speakers and the Chorus 714 S and 714 V towers.

The Focal story, 1979 to today

Jacques Mahul founded Focal in Saint-Étienne, France, in 1979, first making drive units. Complete speakers carried the JMlab name, after Mahul's laboratory, until it was phased out in the mid-2000s.

Utopia. The Grande Utopia flagship arrived in 1995, and the Grande Utopia Be and Electra Be followed in the mid-2000s. Focal says its high-end speakers are built in its own Saint-Étienne workshops.

Sib and Chorus. The compact Sib satellites and Cub subwoofer arrived in the early 2000s, alongside the Chorus range of towers, bookshelf speakers and centres.

Focal and Naim. Focal and Naim Audio came together under one holding company in the early 2010s. The group, later called VerVent Audio, set up Focal Naim Canada in 2019 when it bought its North American distributors, and Belgium's Barco completed its purchase of the group in April 2026.

Which Focal is which?

Early JMlab: models such as the Opal 706 (1985) and the Vega (1990).

Utopia (from 1995): the Grande Utopia and Grande Utopia Be, and today's Diva and Scala Utopia models.

Electra Be and Profile (mid-2000s).

Chorus: towers such as the 714 S and 714 V, the 705 S bookshelf speaker and the CC 700 S centre.

Sib and Co: the Sib and Sib XL satellites, the Cub subwoofer and the Hop stands. The Sib Evo of 2017 added Dolby Atmos.

Later ranges: Aria, Chora, Vestia and Theva.
