What it is

The RC-1550 belongs to Rotel’s 15 series, made between 2009 and 2013 — which makes it a genuinely modern component rather than a vintage one. There are no forty-year-old capacitors in it, and it was designed in an era when a preamplifier was expected to handle a phono cartridge and a streamer with equal composure.

What separates it from the crowd of budget preamplifiers it competed against is where Rotel spent the money: the power supply. It uses a custom toroidal transformer wound to Rotel’s own specification, feeding British-made BHC slit-foil capacitors. Slit-foil is not a cosmetic choice. The foil is scored to interrupt eddy currents in the plates, which lowers the capacitor’s own inductance and lets it deliver current more cleanly on demand. In a preamplifier, where the signal is small and the noise floor is everything, the quality of the supply is most of the design.

What you get

Six line-level inputs plus a moving-magnet phono stage, so a turntable connects directly with no external stage required.

Two independent sets of main outputs — which is more useful than it sounds. Run a power amplifier from one and a powered subwoofer from the other, or feed a second amplifier in another room, without splitters or compromise.

There is a contour control for tailoring the tonal balance when a recording or a room needs it, and a 12-volt trigger output for switching a power amplifier on and off with the preamplifier rather than reaching behind the rack.

The remote is included. On this model that matters — it is how the input selection and volume are driven from the listening position, and a preamplifier without its remote is a preamplifier you have to get up for.

Very good. A genuinely handsome piece — the silver facia is clean and the unit presents beautifully.
