A German-made Dual 606 direct-drive turntable from around 1980, in a wood plinth with a polished dust cover, fully serviced by our turntable technician and in very good condition. It comes fitted with an Ortofon X1-MC moving-coil cartridge.
What it is
The 606 was the middle model of Dual’s three-deck range of the day, above the belt-drive CS 506 and below the quartz-locked CS 706. It is built around Dual’s electronically controlled EDS 500 direct-drive motor, carrying a 1.4 kg platter. With direct drive there is no belt to stretch or replace: the platter sits on the motor itself and comes up to speed in about three seconds. It plays 33⅓ and 45 rpm, with pitch adjustment and a strobe so you can see the speed is right.
The tonearm is Dual’s Ultra Low Mass (ULM) design on a four-point gimbal bearing. Tracking force is set with a spring dial at the pivot, and Dual’s anti-resonance counterweight sits at the back. It is simple to use: you lower the arm onto the record with the cueing lever, and at the end of a side the arm lifts and returns to its rest on its own.
The cartridge is an Ortofon X1-MC, a high-output moving-coil design with an elliptical stylus. Most moving-coil cartridges need a dedicated MC phono stage or a step-up device. The X1-MC puts out 2 mV, so it plugs straight into the standard phono input on a receiver or amplifier, with no extra box required.
The service it has had
Fully serviced by our turntable technician, including a replacement smoked dust cover, polished. Back on our bench, it was set up and checked again before listing: the tonearm balanced, tracking force and anti-skating set, and the cueing and auto-return tested.
Condition
Very Good, and free of significant marks. The replacement smoked dust cover is polished, and the wood plinth and deck present well, as the photographs show.
Direct drive, a gimbal-bearing Dual arm and a moving-coil Ortofon that plugs into any phono input, ready for your records.
