Denon DRA-835R Vintage Stereo Receiver – 100 WPC, Made in Japan

The second-from-the-top model in Denon’s early-nineties stereo receiver range, made in Japan and in very good condition, with 100 watts per channel, a phono stage, motorized volume and its original remote.

What it is

Denon introduced the DRA-835R in 1991 as second in command of its stereo receiver series, which ran from the flagship DRA-1035R down through the 835R, 635R, 435R and 335R. Only the flagship sat above it. The 835R delivers 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms and carries the New Optical Class-A badge on its front panel. It is a receiver built for a proper two-channel system: an MM phono input for your turntable, two full tape loops, a Source Direct switch that takes the tone controls out of the signal path, and pre-out and main-in jacks with a Normal/Separate switch, so the preamp and power amp sections can be split to add an equalizer, a processor or a bigger power amplifier later.

The volume knob is motorized, so it turns by itself when you adjust the level from the original remote, which is included. The AM/FM tuner stores 40 presets, takes direct station entry from a numeric keypad, and has a selectable IF band for pulling in weak or crowded stations. Around the back are A and B speaker pairs on 5-way binding posts that take bare wire, spades, pins or banana plugs (we recommend our own Radique Audio gold-plated banana plugs, and our Custom Speaker Cable Builder will make a pair to length), video jacks for a VCR and a disc player, and three AC outlets, one unswitched and two switched.

It sold new in 1991 for US$800, about $1,850 in 2026 Canadian dollars.

Condition

Very good, and free of significant marks, as the photographs show. The original Denon remote is included.
