Description

A pair of Linn Keilidh floorstanding loudspeakers, designed and built in Glasgow, Scotland, in Linn’s rich, deep red Rosenut wood veneer. This pair is set up for bi-wiring: see “Connecting them” below.

Radique’s Take

Linn speakers do not turn up often in used listings on this side of the Atlantic. The Keilidh is Linn’s slim two-way tower, built with much of the technology of the larger Kaber and Keltik, and it takes up barely more floor than a bookshelf speaker on a stand. Linn designed it to grow with a system, from an ordinary passive speaker all the way to a fully active Linn setup.

Owners describe it the same way again and again: a speaker that punches well above its size.

What makes it good

Two mid/bass drivers sit symmetrically above and below a ceramic dome tweeter, the same tweeter Linn used in the Kaber and Keltik. Putting the tweeter between the two drivers gives a very stable, well-focused sound image. The two bass drivers work in parallel and hand over to the tweeter at 2.8 kHz.

The cabinet is braced along its full height and damped with fibre absorbent and Linn’s KU-STONE composite, so the panels stay quiet and let the drivers do the talking. Linn also soldered the input sockets directly to the crossover board, keeping the signal path as short as it can be.

Connecting them

This pair is set up for bi-wiring, and the panel on the back of each speaker says so: use the top four sockets only. The top pair, marked TREBLE, feeds the tweeter, and the middle pair, marked BASS, feeds the two mid/bass drivers. The bottom pair, marked ACTIVE BASS, is only for Linn active systems and stays unused here.

They are sold set up this way, so they call for a bi-wire speaker cable: one connector at the amplifier and two at each speaker. Linn’s sockets take 4 mm banana plugs, a snug and secure connection. Our Custom Speaker Cable Builder makes bi-wire cables to your exact length in House Quad, Kimber 4PR or Kimber 4TC, terminated with gold-plated Radique Audio Banana Plugs.

Placement and amplification

Linn recommends placing the speakers with their backs 4 to 12 inches (10 to 30 cm) from the wall and at least 18 inches (45 cm) from a corner, angled in slightly toward your listening position. Closer to the wall gives more bass, but too close and the bass loses its pace, so a little experimenting pays off.

Nominal impedance is 4 ohms, and Linn recommends an amplifier of at least 60 watts per channel into 4 ohms. Any good integrated amplifier or receiver that is happy with a 4-ohm load will drive them well.

Condition

Very good. Both cabinets present well, with light signs of use and no significant marks. Tested on our bench before listing.

A slim Scottish tower with real pedigree, ready for the right bi-wire run.
