Description

The RF-62 is the tower that made Klipsch’s Reference line the default answer for anyone who wanted a big, unforced sound without buying a big, expensive amplifier to get it.

Start with the number that matters most on this speaker: 97 decibels at one watt. That is roughly eight times as loud, for the same power, as a typical 88dB bookshelf speaker. A ten-watt amplifier drives these to a volume most people never use. A vintage 35-watt receiver drives them past the point of politeness. It means the amplifier you already own is almost certainly enough, and it means the first watt — the one doing the work on quiet passages — is being asked to do far less, which is where the sense of ease comes from.

That efficiency comes from the horn. The tweeter is a one-inch titanium compression driver on a 90-by-60-degree square Tractrix horn, with a large ceramic motor behind it. A horn does not push air the way a dome does; it couples the driver to the room, which is why it goes loud on so little and why the treble stays composed when the volume goes up. The controlled dispersion is the other half of it — the sound is aimed into the room rather than sprayed at the side walls, so these are less fussy about room treatment and placement than most towers.

Below the horn sit two six-and-a-half-inch Cerametallic woofers with the inverted copper dust caps that give the Reference line its face. The ceramic-over-aluminum cone is very stiff for its weight and damps quickly, which is what keeps the bass from smearing into the midrange. They cross over to the horn at 1,800 hertz and run down to 38 hertz, loading through twin rear-firing ports.

The cabinet is braced internally and ribbed around the horn mouth and the lower panel — the parts of a tall, narrow box most likely to sing along with the music. At 54 pounds each these are substantially built.

Each cabinet stands just over forty inches tall and only eight and a half inches wide, in black vinyl, with a low-diffraction grille that attaches magnetically — no visible pegs or holes in the baffle when the grille is off.

Condition is Good. The drivers are Very Good throughout — horns, woofers and surrounds all sound and look as they should. The cabinets carry minor wear from use, which has been touched up, and the pair presents well.
